What app do you guys use to listen to the podcasts? I don’t have Spotify, or at least I don’t have a subscription for Spotify.

OK, I jest (a little). I've listened to a couple of Radio 4 series (true crime!) but always feel that so many of the podcasts I see advertised or recommended are little more than ego-boosting exercises on the part of people I've never heard of. Like social media, they seem to give people with little talent (or real knowledge) a platform on which to express their views in public to a frequently gullible public. I've been asked why don't I do a series of podcasts based on my somewhat varied automotive journalistic career, but apart from the fact I hate the sound of my voice on radio/tv, I feel it would be nothing more than saying 'Hey look at me!'. Apart from that, I wouldn't even begin to know how on earth you do such things! Spoken as a true Luddite whose radio is permanently tuned to either Radio 4 or Radio 6 Music...

Keith - you’re not a Luddite and you know it. I don’t consider myself one either and my Sonos streams Radio 4 and 6 Music, BBC Sounds along with Spotify and various playlists (curated annually across the last ten years largely by Trish).

But you and I are both ex mainstream media journalists, and obviously what changed is that while we used to have and enjoy the responsibility and ability to broadcast and publish, the arrival of digital media democratised the whole bang shoot and, wonderfully, that meant every Tom Dick Harry and Sheila can and do create and publish media themselves, whether through Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Spotify, whatever…

Most are just using it for their own enjoyment with limited impact, but some understandably want more, and across the motoring scene in general that’s meant an explosion in digital creators. People like Harry Metcalfe and Johnny Smith and Chris Harris, all ex mainstream media car journos as you know, sit at the top of the tree, each monetising in their own particular way their passions and interests - which I love- because it means my passion is served to varying degrees of enjoyment by lots of stuff to watch. And beside them are lots of other hopefuls, all around the world serving up their own vids, podcasts, livestreams and putting them out through all the various outlets, Twitter included.

So each of us decides quickly who we like and who we don’t, and if we don’t like em it doesn’t matter, we just don’t watch them or listen to them - they’re not filling up precious airspace because there’s infinite capacity.

And sharing the good items we see or hear is great on DDK,as we do in Porsche Video of the Day etc and long may it continue.

All a bit obvious really.. but worth saying that our petrolhead interests are now pretty well served, and giving thanks for that…

apple podcasts app for all
spotify ( we have music subsciption but podcast only use specifically for parenting hell as its now exclusivy on there)
