A great afternoon prepping the car today for driving tomorrow. Every job went according to plan, which is rare!

I noticed on a previous occasion this socket looked quite worn and I didn't want to lose the throttle while out and about.

Image

So I replaced with a new one, including the little wire clip.

Image

I opened up the passenger door and repaired the lock barrel which was falling out with the key. I had no idea how it went back together but miraculously all the parts were in the door, including the little screw and it went together beautifully.

It was a really nice surprise to find no rust whatsoever in the base of the door. The galvanising on these later cars seems really good, and I think this car must have been garaged its entire life.

Image

It'll need a good wipe down, but I put one of the 911T seats in the back so my daughters can come out for a drive tomorrow. It went straight in. And I took out the 6 point harness hoops, which would be pretty hazardous for passengers.

Image

I investigated why the radio wasn't working and found a fallen out fuse. Nice and simple fix.

Image

I put together a tool roll with Jack, wheel brace, locking nuts, tyre inflater etc.

I epoxied this piece of broken trim from the passenger footwell.

Image

All in all a productive day. Image

No time left to clean the car, sadly. I'll have to do that in the morning. And finishing late, as usual, I've no motivation left to tidy up afterwards.

I thought I'd start a single thread to pull together all the work I do on this car... and I got to thinking and did a search and found out I'd started this and forgotten about it. The joys of old age, I suppose.

I found these ballbearings cleaning out the cabin... any reason to be concerned or where they could be missing from?

The car has a performance exhaust and is a bit drony around 2,000 rpm so I decided to add some Kilmat soundproofing to the rear.

It was with considerable trepidation that I stripped out the carpets in this car. The MOT tester always comments what great shape it's in, but he's looking from the outside and you never know if it's rusting away from inside. There's been some water ingress from time to time, and being a sunroof model creates opportunity for water to get in.

But I'm really impressed with the rustproofing on this 1988 car. The bitumen mats are all intact and no rust at all in the floor.

I treated it to a cost of 2K epoxy paint around all the edges, to deal with any scratches which may exist and to ensure any water which does enter, can't get under the soundproofing.

Image

One of the seats was damp in the soundproofing smd crusty underneath so it got stripped, primed and coated in 2K epoxy.

While the carpets were out I welded in some proper seatbelt mounts. There were nuts behind, but not captive.

The joys of welding surrounded by glass and upholstery.

Kilmat in the seats and I covered some parts of the tunnel and bases of the sills.

I took the car out today and my initial view is that it seems way quieter with the mats in the seats. I'll have a stronger opinion after the drive down to Megaphonics.

This spends most of its time rolling around under the seat. Any suggestions how to make it stay on better? Loctite? Nylock nut? The nut doesn't seem deep enough to accommodate a nylock.Image

I went to take out my 3.2 backdate last weekend, to find the battery flat. And upon trying to charge it, it was misbehaving - the charger showing it charging then not charging - half full then not half full, but it wouldn't start the car, so I ordered a new one this week. When it came to fitting it, I realised the Earth terminal was a spot loose. So there's probably nothing wrong with the battery after all. :/

I had the battery out, so I decided to fit the new one anyway. On a plus note at least I now have a spare battery!

While I was at it, the Noco charger adapter which came with the car, was a bit Heath Robinson, with black tape tied around the joins and the eyes looked a bit fragile so I decided to replace them.

A sad aspect of today's throwaway society is the general cheapness and poor quality of items which people in general seem willing to accept.

Not wanting to fit cheap shiz I split a 22mm copper pipe and flattened a section.

Image

I cut out the shape of a couple of eyelets.

Image

Crimped and soldered them onto the wire and sealed up all the joins with heat shrink.

Image

Compare the flimsy retail product versus the home made one.

Image

While I was at it, the entire boot got a thorough wash and vacuum. I cleaned up and painted some broken paint. The rubber pads under the spare wheel were loose so I glued them back in, and the whole area is looking a lot better.

On a hot day, a sunroof brings the joy of the wind on one's bald patch where there used to be hair. And in an old car, it also brings much trepidation regarding whether it will open and close one more time without mechanical failure.

Recent hot weather had me walking the sunroof tightrope in my 3.2 backdate. The journey out was in high spirits, boosted by my good fortune in having a well-cooled scalp.

A few yards from home, depressing the close button was rewarded by a reassuring hum of the motor, followed by the sound of glitching out and repetitive clicking noises.

Closer inspection showed that one of the long hinges on the wind deflector had failed. And looking closer still revealed another broken clip.

Image

Image

Assuming the plastic may have embrittled with age, I purchased the full set of all four to simply replace the lot and give it its best chance of a long reliable service.

Image

All the other parts are steel or aluminium so should be good for the duration.

I cleaned out all the old grease, relubricated the mechanism, stripped and repainted the wind deflector which was showing a light dusting of rust in places, and reassembled.

Image

All in all a pleasing job.

They say it's important to have the tinware in good condition with rubber seals around, to keep any fumes getting from below the engine, up into the fan.

For this reason I decided to block up this little hole left by the backdated heat.

Image

Keeping things lightweight, I cut a sheet of aluminium to size and shape, backed with a sheet of rubber and held in place with a screw and spire clip.

It's the window winder. Sorry, I thought that was apparent!
