It was a puzzle as I never thought it would be the cause, I was convinced it was electrical.
Old car eh?

Day after the frenzy to fix the car, MoT all done ok, car starts.

However...

The key will not come off the start position (spring resist compressed) on it's own. It's been like this for some time.
If you don't manually turn the key back off the spring the starter motor stays engaged to the running engine!

The simplest/cheapest solution is to wire the starter via a push-button switch added under the dash - so you switch the ignition on & then use the push-button to activate the starter ...

Any idea what amps the solenoid pulls on the lightweight starter?
We have used the same starter. Will 10 amps cover it?

I've bought/fitted this type of switch (bought from various sources like ebay, Auto Electrical Supplies, Car Builder Solutions, etc) to various Alfas & early 911's, etc.

They're available with either spade of screw terminals.

That is the very same one I looked at on ebay, touch cheaper, not much.
I have a few spare holes on the dash, ie rear window demister that is not wired or present, so may be good.
