Good to see this coming apart and turning out so well, so far.
Big project but will be special in the end Lee.
I spent 5 years tracking down the chassis number of my race car, a Lola T 492.
I succeeded in tracing every one of the 9 owners except one who was dead.
Spoke to them all with varying levels of info and accuracy, but got the number in the end and ratified by Lola Heritage.

I could never have done this without one forum in particular, so was lucky to find it to use.

Maybe you need to find one active in S A and work from there?

Thanks Graham,

The main area of rust so far is the front partition panel and the kidney bowls.
You won’t believe the amount of SA contacts I’ve tried without any luck.

Me and Arfor have tried so many times with people connected to the Porsche world.
It’s as if the car disappeared of the earth a long time back.

I guess people pass and the cars are forgotten and it’s no longer on the system because it left the country.

Tracing history of cars from South Africa is difficult. Fortunately, I found one old invoice with Abbot Cars on it. Timmy Abbot, who now runs the business, provided a lot of invoices for work going back many years and the names of six owners none of whom I could trace despite having someone in SA searching. PCSA did not want to help but an FB post on an SA Porsche page traced a later owner who provided pictures of the car as a club racer.

Yes I too spoke to Abbott cars as I had an invoice for a new clutch. A friend of his said Abbott had three owners for the car but only got details of one?

It was all very strange and felt someone didn’t want to be contacted. I have three registrations and one TBV32 seems to be a very early reg from bedfordview Edenvale area. Rich area.

Getting a low reg number 32 at the time would have been quite hard. I was told maybe a government official owned it.

It’s strange how a car spends its life in Johannesburg but nobody remembers it. But I’m unsure if the car was in different parts of Africa?
That may be the reason why nobody remembers it.

Unfortunately there was Eddie Palodin who owned a good Porsche shop in SA but died in a plane crash. And a racing car driver called Peter Lanz of targa motors. He won’t answer emails. But was told both could have serviced the car. Peco motors is another. M R Cars. Most are gone.

I must have sent 300 emails to people and contacts with not must coming back. It’s as if the car was tucked away for years before a guy called John Prins restored in late 90s. Now dead. Couldn’t remember the previous owner from edenvale.

I personally think it’s been in other African countries but hard to work out. Your a lucky man!

I spent ages, as in year, tracking down the info on my Lola.
It involved a lot of effort, newspaper articles and even a convicted drug dealer!
However, after years it all suddenly fell into place when the car's original body was found in a farm barn in Essex and bought back for a bottle of white and red wine.
You could have made a 30 minute TV program out of it all.

Although all in England red herrings and more took me to the USA and more.
Got to keep searching!

My Porsche was imported back to the Uk I 2000 by a Dutch guy. Not very helpful. Said he had not imported a LWB only a light ivory SWB. He imported it for tower Porsche in London they confirmed it was him. He had his own 911 and 356. He said he would have pictures on his camera but not willing to look. Not very friendly chap and waste of time unfortunately. Some people help others don’t. A Complete prick….. sorry for the language.

Don’t think tower Porsche operate anymore but seems to busy to look for any further data. The last owner in SA was a car salesman called Ludi Keitsmann, I contacted him who promised to look for info but fell on def ears. You have to be very lucky when trying to find details on a car from SA. Someone at some point repaired this cars metal work at a pretty good standard and must have been taken back to metal in places. So it’s strange nobody knows it. These cars are old, people pass away and the info is lost for good!

Got back to the resto today for a little while.

Could someone tell me if the roof section is made out of different metal to the other panels?
The paint removal was so much easier and the metal seems much shinier than the rear wings and doors?

One paint strip on this panel and it came off?

Tower Porsche where still going last time I passed but are always busy. I don't think they are the best record keepers

A right turd considering he’s a Porsche enthusiast.
Not very helpful and rather rude.

Less colours of primer / paint. No rot or rust so far.

So maybe better metal?….. damage normally happens to doors, wings etc.
Can anyone confirm it the same gauge and type of metal is used on the roof section as the doors, wings etc.

Back home from Brazil, Roof stripped now the sills. Going to try and blitz what I can. Now aiming to be stripped for January

Ive just realised ive never measured the thickness of Porsche panels.I presume they hover between 0.9 & 1mm.Ill measure roof panel tomoz for you if i remember.Itll be the same gauge as everything else.Ive a nice roof cut to measure.
