Well happily, but slightly embarrassingly I seemed to have sorted it.

Despite remembering changing it in the early stages of the car running rough (dropped by a mates air cooled resto /repair business at the time, and he recalls us swapping it too) it looks like it was a sodding condenser all along.

All I can think of is I was carrying another duff one with me, which would make sense as it rapidly went downhill on the way back from his place, a 20 minute drive. Ending with a tow for the last 2 miles (thanks again Paul).

At least I found it before taking the carbs apart again, as I was going through the dizzy in stages with borrowed parts as a kind of way of delaying the strip down. Glad I did!

Thanks for all the suggestions and help, learned stuff as ever, and bar a bit of carb fiddling it's running nice.

Well done James! Do you know, we all mentioned ignition and dizzies but as far as I remember no mention of the important condenser. I had one years ago fail too.

At least your problem will make condensers stick in my mind! Thanks for letting us know.
