I don't know where you got that engine number from but it bears no resemblance to format used for 2.0 911 engines.
There were 4 different engines used in the 1968 911L:
- engine type no. 901/06 with serial no. in the format 308 XXXX fitted to ROW 911L models
- engine type no. 901/07 with serial no. in the format 318 XXXX fitted to ROW 911L Sportomatic
- engine type no. 901/14 with serial no. in the format 328 XXXX fitted to USA 911L models
- engine type no. 901/17 with serial no. in the format 338 XXXX fitted to USA 911L Sportomatic
I would also say that you need to be very careful when buying a car that has been dismantled by someone else - even more so if it was done a number of years ago - as it's easy to spot if major items are still present but there are 1000's of smaller components (including specific fasteners, brackets, clips, etc) that could be missing ...
.
I know that some cases were replaced and then re-stamped..i have attached an image of the stamping on the fan support of the crankcase.. any ideas please ?
That could be a re-stamp / frankenmotor, or could be from a 67 Targa (I think...). As Andy says, definitely not the original from a '68 car. Do you have a pic of the type number (as opposed to the serial number)? It can be found on the horizontal bit of the casting near the upright where the serial number is stamped, and is of format "901/01" "901/05" etc.

And if you have a few weeks, why not have the owner get the build details from Porsche UK, or ideally the Kardex? That will tell you the spec and major ID numbers when it left the factory.
Getting that document will be worth his investment of time and money, probably, whatever the sale mechanism turns out to be.
BTW hanging panels on and going via eBay - does that really work? I would have thought that a serious buyer would be much more interested in photos of every single part, not of an artists impression of how a 911 might look one day...

.
Engine number '911931' would be a '67 911 (non-S) engine.
It should be Type 901/06 which is the same as used in the '68 ROW 911 L ...

I have a few weeks to think about it..
Well, I think this your bargaining tool. If he wants it to be restored, then its value is less than that parts. IMO the car is worth £10 to £15k as is. £15k should be achievable if the car is broken for parts - but I've seen no photos so guessing..... So bid him £10k?, promise to restore, then sell if you take cold feet. Poss a few on DDK who would take it on? Or sell for parts. I dont understand sellers at times, once its sold its sold whether or not it restored or not means nothing. On a side note I did by a 996 Ducati from a chap who said it had to go to someone would love and care for it.... Anyone for a 996 Ducati???

So I have been asking around and it looks like it doesn't make sense for me to restore it as the cost is looking north of £100,000 to make an £80,000 car.. I think that the car is worth more sold off in parts, which is against the owners wishes.. If anyone is interested in the car as a project or in buying any of the major parts please let me know and I will put any offers to the owner..
Having spoken to Classic Carreras and Tuthill, the shell restoration costs are going to be £35-50,000.
Oh i don't know what to do... i fancy a little R gruppe style hotrod...

Buy a new 992 for £100k.... within 4 years it will have lost maybe £40k.... within 8 years maybe another £15k lost
Buy this car and restore it all in for £100k, within 4 years it might be worth £80k so only lost £20k, 8 years later still worth £80k
So my man maths shows you’re actually saving money building this swb , in fact over 8 years you could be £40k better off than if you’d bought a new 911

Let me have a go at that. Within 4 years you will have started the resto. 8 years later it still won't be finished. You will have bought a 992 in the meantime. Amiright?

Hello,
I have a friend who is interested in the 68 L. He runs a small body shop so ideally placed to restore the car for himself ( at a sensible cost)He has recently completed a 1967 912 for his own use. If you are definately not interested in restoring the car please contact me. Thanks. Kirk
PM me on DDK.
