You may find that this is more of a function of the camshaft overlap of the early cars making them more sensitive to muffler type. OE Leistritz and Bischoff guaranteed to work well, but other replicas from Dansk work just as well. Make sure you get the type for long hood or the tailpipe will be in the wrong place.
Later cars with their cis injection and no-overlap cams are not critical at all.
