Interestingly I spoke to a friend the other day who’s into classic agricultural stuff, he reckoned he once owned a tractor which had a factory fitted ceramic coated exhaust, the tractor was 50 years old at this point and the exhaust still looked like new apparently. Certainly sounds impressive, must admit I was surprised it hadn’t rotted from the inside out after all that time, who knows, perhaps it had and was just ceramic at that point

Presume you mean the ceramic coatings graham? I’m not sure, I think I would agree that surface prep is vital in achieving a long lasting finish. But can a longish lasting finish be achieved with the right vht product if prepared/applied properly?

I feel almost every coating will not last at the back of a 911.
The debris that comes off the rear wheels is intense, and any pint may survive heat, but simple abrasion?
If you wanted to remove any surface coating/contamination/rust etc prior to re-coating (say) then you would prob grit blast it.
So if the part is made from decent stainless steel, such abrasion simple thins the surface down progressively, and in the case of a 911 silencer, it will resist for many years.
IMHO any coating's ability to resist abrasion is as important as the coating's ability to resist delamination/degradation due to heat leading to corrosion.
