Doesn't a smaller steering wheel have the same effect?
I had a QR in my hillclimb Impreza, a Subaru part, but with power steering.

I'm now leaning back to stock - apart from the bit of play in it, it feels pretty good. Then forego the security deposit and keep my old one and rebuild it with a QR rack. For the time being I want something I can swap out over the week-end

The 'lash' will probably be down to wear on the support pad which has reduced the preload on the pinion.

The Post 1969 racks were designed to take up wear in a subtly different way to the early rack.

Changing the support pad is not too difficult and in the late rack is the only way to reduce the lash.



We have also re-manufactured the rack end bushes to the original specification.

Just to finish this off I stuck with standard ratio and all I needed to do was install one of Chris' re manufactured pucks.

No need to remove the rack or anything.

The puck presses against the lower part of the rack pushing it against the upper part of the rack (probably wrong descriptions here) - the puck is held in place by a spring.

After nearly 300,000 miles it looked like this

When I first refitted it along with the existing shim (x3) the steering was too stiff. The old one had worn down massively as you can see in the pics - so the new one was quite a bit bigger. Removed the shims and it feels great - the lash/slop is gone.

When it was worn down it isn't pushing the rack up as hard, so the cogs aren't meshing tightly - hence the lash/slop

With Chris's remanufactured puck installed all the slop was gone

Result!!!

Just as a postscript to this I thought I'd comment on how it feels. Whenever you make a change and then drive it round the block it's hard to objectively say what has changed and by how much - I usually find it's not until I'm driving to work Monday morning, and I've forgotten about what I did to the car recently, that I really appreciate the change and it often takes me by surprise.

It has transformed the steering - I hadn't appreciated how sloppy it had become, but the car is easier to place which gives you more confidence at all speeds.
