I use a heavy duty wire brush called a zipper wheel on the end of a small size angle grinder. Done 2 whole cars like that. Messy but at least it is a totally dry process.

i intend to use the so called zipper on a grinder as it seems the best a possibly quickest way...

so the original factory finish stuff is wurth under body paint?? anyone have a part no or code for this??

would it also be beneficial to paint it with a zinc based primer first??

:?: :)

Having just stripped the pan on my '70 T with the zipper, I treated it with an american product that is commonly used by the Pelican Parts crowd called POR 15 metal ready. This is a phosphating etch treatment which is about the best thing you can do to neutralise what is left after the zipper. It is available from www.frost.co.uk who are the UK agent. Then used that upol etch primer, then primer surfacer, just about to apply VW stone chip to that. Topped of with a dash of body colour as per factory.

I wondered when POR-15 would get a mention. I've just painted my supspension in it - (still got black arms to prove it). Any reason why you didn't POR-15 Paint the underside of the car?

"Ditto" painted suspension and underside on mine seems to give a very good finish. May coat it with wurth though havnt made up my mind yet, any thoughts on if this is necessary?

I did the inner arches of my bug with what I think is a zipper wheel on a grinder.. then Por15 and then Hammerite.

All good. Horrible job.

still doing it.. worst job i have ver done... did my 55 oval bug under the arches the same but forgot how much of a pain it was... even worse doing the floor pan with about 10 inches of space to move around and a heavy grinder!!! its one of those jobs that seems to take forever and is mega boring!!

I used a propane torch on mine, set to a low presure and a large nozle think it took me about 8 hours in total, for a scraper I had a selection of hard scrapers and wood chisels. I did remove the petrol tank though and hadthe car up on axle stands. just remember if you go this route to keep an extinguisher handy and always strip in front of yourself, wear goggles and good gloves.Aim to just soften the coating and not to burn it off, you can also use a hot air gun but it is slower.

Yes. heat and an old fashioned scraper is my way too..

Ifeel that there is some advantage in not removing the , admittedly thin, layer of zinc from the underbody of the 69 on cars..

The zipper wheel, or in my case wire wheel, is then applied to the rusty bits..

It is about one very very hard and messy days work to strip..

Kind regards
David
