A colleague tried welding his tank after leaving it empty for months, it exloded

I can see this is going to take up a lot of my time over the next few weeks

I did do this, but had a new Ali tank made to accommodate RHD changes to the front bulkhead - no expansion tank issues therefore. We did it with a simple Ali neck, drip tray and Aston style filler. I then made a mould from one of my wife's favourite pasta bowls , and then bonded it to my glassfibre bonnet. Much easier for me as the car was far from standard.....

Thanks for the input. I am need this to look as factory as possible, hence the expansion tank and all.
I shall have a bash and see where I end up......Oh and post the pictures of the mayhem I'll keep an extinguisher handy.

what a nut case. I'm amazed he's reached the years he has if he takes risks like that with the fuel tank and the digger holding up the car. Stupid

I have very soon a kit ready for the 914 , very simple plug and play NO WELDING NEEDED

6 screws , and you drill a hole in the bonnet and that´s it, every thing you will need, comes with the kit

they will be priced at ca 350 Euro

The kit will come with the same cap Org BLAU , dog bowl etc as I did on this kit below , which many of you know

The flammable range - sometimes called explosive limits - of petrol vapour are 1.4 to 7.6% by volume. In other words if you have petrol vapour mixing with air between those values the whole vapour / air mixture is an explosive atmosphere. Below 1.4% the mixture is too weak. Above 7.6% it's too rich. If you're between the two it's an accident waiting to happen. Still needs a source of ignition, but they come along every now and again. Adjusting a carb is a good analogy: you're adjusting the mixture to be within the range in that case.

Petrol has a particularly low flashpoint too: -37 degrees Celsius. So petrol that is cooler than that is not dangerous, but when warmer is evolving vapour (evaporating). If it should mix in that certain ratio...

Because petrol vapour is heavier than air it can sit in confined spaces for long periods. This is the risk with nominally empty tanks - they're actually more dangerous than filled ones.

It's also partly why acetylene is so dangerous. That has a flammable range of 2 to 82%, an extraordinarily wide flammable range - almost any leak mixing with air is highly dangerous.
