The article apparently claims in markets where they have to reduce the initial selling price of a new car, they make the deficit up by overcharging for genuine spare parts and service items.

Years ago I read somewhere that 70% of Audi’s profits came from the spares they sell???

I can believe that.... My A3 horns (both!) have packed in at 25k miles.
Circa £50 each from the dealer.

Or £14 for the pair off eBay

Id bet all big car companies make 100% of their profit from parts sales and finance..

The terrible thing is that Porsche are using the same part numbers for reproduction stuff as the originals, which is very misleading.

The should change the last two digits of the P/N for all of the re-manufactured parts so we'd know what we are buying.

Yes, that would help.

IMO the "no returns" policy also needs to change. At the moment the OPC parts person often does not have decent photos or spec for the part, so neither he nor the customer knows whether it will be acceptable (to a sad detail freak like me) when it turns up.
Also different OPCs seem to have different policies / different classifications of what's special order.

Seems like a mess, and puts me off buying from my OPC, despite the parts folks' helpfulness (really) and the eat-all-you-can free biscuits. I think this is a mindset / policy adjustment Porsche are going to need to make as their classic business (further) expands. Restorers of classics must surely be expected to be more picky than lease companies running Macans. If the parts can't be made better, they at least need to be properly documented pre-sale, and returnable.

Remember also that the supplier of a part can change several times during the life cycle of the car so which one do you consider the 'original' and not re manufactured?
