Quite possibly. When I get 5 mins I will be starting a similar thread on earlysreg

So after dropping the car off with Gary Cook who a few ddkers will be familiar with as he has and is supporting a number of other members restorations, I was able to pop along this weekend to check out progress of how the stripdown and logging of parts is coming along. Glad to say gary has completed this in pretty quick time, although I guess there was not much of the interior in the first place to worry about.

The car hasn’t really thrown up any surprises at this point, There are a number of poor repairs around sills, internal rear qtr areas and around where the roll cage was installed. I guess back when this car needed some tlc they really were not worth very much so you can probably expect some of the repair work to be a little sub standard.
So the next step is getting the car to the body shop where the sills and rear qtr will be cut off prior to the car being sent to the media blasters. So hopefully in the next week or so we will know exactly what condition the shell is in.

The original floor is still in place and from what I can see looks reasonable ok, which I find amazing after nearly 50 yrs

Discovered a few areas where we could see some of the original Aga Blue paint:

Chestertons will be looking after the shell. I probably spoke with 5-6 parties who were able to take on the shell, and narrowed my choice down to three, one of which was just a little to far from a commuting distance so that I can drive over and get regular updates and another who was extremely busy and I would have to join a growing cue.

So the decision was made to go with Chestertons largely based on they have worked on a huge number of these cars and I was able to check out a fellow DDKers 67S whereh Chestertons had completed the body work. Also they have been extremely helpful during the planning phase of looking over the car, proving a list of parts I am likely to need etc etc. So happy with my choice.

Next phase condition of the shell post blasting....

I'll try and call in on Gary this week with some polish to clean it up and a spray out sample to see how the colour compares.

Actually very difficult to find a paint supplier offering Aga Blue in solid...........everyone wants to supply water based paint and lacquer!

Fortunately we did manage to find a quality source in 2K...........the light/reflection doesn't help in the photo and I'm told it's a great match in the flesh....

Yep, they're a good crowd and well able to restore the body to the highest standards. Highly recommended by me.

So after dropping the shell off at Chestertons Sills, roll cage and rear qtr’s were chopped out, we then had to wait for a window where the weather was kind to us to blast the car, glad to say this was completed last week. Since its return to the workshop I have not had chance to take some time off to travel up to Oxfordshire to take a look at the car. John the main man at Chestertons sent me a couple of snaps this morning and I’m glad to say it don’t look to bad, granted you cant see any of the dreaded aftermark of the dreaded rust, but all in all John told me the internal shell wings and all are not to bad, even the floor was pretty good. Due to the cars past competition history we were both expecting the car not to be straight, John gave me the good news this morning that it was slightly out but after a few hours its now all straight and ready for the its next chapter.
Before having the car blasted John completed a thorough inspection and provided a list of panels which I would need to bring the car back to its former glory. The front wings had to go as they had been chopped up for some reason by a previous owner to fit LWB front side lights and horn grills, don’t ask me why….fortunately they were not the original wings for the car. All the normal areas needed attention, inner/outer sills, rear qtrs. Were quite bad, and the bonnet had to go as it had had a number of previous repairs. The biggest surprise was that the car probably during its completion days had been fitted with a new roof, which had been badly done, so we decided that there was only one way to get this correct, a new roof….. Taking all this into account your all probably thinking theres not much of the original outer panels left… well gven the car is almost 50 years old, not much of a surprise.
So original deck lid and original doors are left with the car, and I’m glad to say the inner wings look pretty good, will only need some light repair work.
Will be taking trip to the work shop to see progress at first hand in the next few weeks, but in the mean time here are a couple of pictures.

Been ages since a good welding project!

Some work has already started obviously, interesting the see the front end slam panel removed and the base of the windscreen which I think is part of the roof panel.

Good start Mark. Looking forward to this SWB thread, makes a nice change.

Took my first trip up to see the car since it was media blasted on Friday. I had spoke to John at Chestertons over the last few weeks and he assured me that the car was in reasonably solid condition. True to his word I was amazed at how little rot was evident on the car. The worse areas I could see were parts of the rear internal wings, where some rot was evident as well some quite bad previous repairs, but all in all very pleased.

As part of the Chesterton coach work service, John will provide n album of the restoration at the end of the project, so I will have hundreds of pictures providing a lot more detail of each part of the body work restoration. For the time being I will post a few pictures from each of my visits up to the workshop.
If there are any specific areas that people are interested in let me know I will post some further pictures once this stage of the project is complete.
Front of the car is one of the areas where I was pleasantly surprised with the lack of rot, small repair around the chassis number under the hood
Driver/passenger footwell area again all pretty solid just a few areas that need a little attention. New floor is in and additional piece for strengthening the inner sill area for the seat sill mounting brackets going in.
