Andy Prill has the stick-on number plates. A friend of mine has an Alfa Romeo spider with teensy weensy Italian sized plates, his number is seven digit being a 'F' reg car. He has never been stopped by the boys in blue and similarly I have had US style plates on my American F150 pickup and have never had any problems. So I reckon you just do what looks right.

My old car originally had its number plates painted on (SA1932). I have left that on (Covered the "SA" - South Australia) and put some laminate film over the number and some of its rally stickers.

The new plate (different State) is below the bumper.

Reading the comment from our Aussie mate got me thinking wouldn't it be nice if the authorities here would delete the requirement for a front number plate such like they do in some states in the USA. So all cars manufactured prior to 1970 or thereabouts would only require a rear plate. I think the ownership of classic cars would certainly increase.

On a 356 I'd run motorbike-sized digits with a square plate at the back and a rectangular one slung below the front bumper. It would look 'to scale' and is unlikely to warrant any attention from the polis. I saw an original 500 a few months ago with a 'proper' rectangular plate up front and it looked absolutely ridiculous.

I have a small 'italian-size' front number plate on my '59 Giulietta Sprint & '69 Alfa Spider & haven't had any problems ...

I think I have made a command decision.

It is going to be a metal number plate for the front in a possibly Italian size.

I believe this is about 11 x 3.

The next question is how to affix to the bottom of the front bumper.

I know there are 2 drainage holes, I dont mind making 2 more to fit a bracket.

Are we aware of anyone producing something that can be used as a bracket for this purpose.

These clamps might do it without the need for drilling any holes.
Perhaps just stick a small piece of that spongy tape either side to give the clamps something to bite into...

I tapped the existing drainage holes and using a section of 90 degree ally, it is easy to make a bracket the width of the holes in most 'plates and attach with SS bolts.

Merv, would you happen to have a picture of your bracket you produced.

It is a cheap fix Julian, that does not impact on the integrity of the bumper or the car body - and displays the number proudly for the cameras ....

I will post an image in the next couple of days. I have the 911 'home' at the moment.
