The garage that did an 'assessment'(I use that term very loosly) on it for the seller told me that it turned over :? . They were more of a modern porsche servicing outfit but god knows how they drew that conclusion.
I'm planning on doing a bit of the stripping work myself once I get a stand to save on some man hours. i'm hoping by the looks of the oil that its just the top end thats seized up over time in a damp garage.

The Body is quite bad in the A pillars and inner front arches and the Sills/jacking points/up the B pillars. The rear quarters are totally buggered too. Some of the other usual problem areas seem to be pretty good though so hopefully not too much work is needed, i'm sure after a blasting it will tell a different story.

Little bit more done today before a relaxing weekend drinking beer in a wet field while pretending to look at a few old volkswagens.

Roped a mate into heat gunning from the engine bay while I tried to carefully remove the parcel shelf and rear seat sound deadening. They all came out whole but some foam was left behind. Are these still available? Whats the done thing to do when reinstating? Modern sound deadener or same as what came out? I'm hoping the old ones can be saved as i'm trying to reuse as much of the original parts as possible.

approx 70hrs in now. The Tub is totally stripped and ready to go off for blasting.

Have been buying up bits and bobs as they come up at the right price. No sizable purchases yet but a panel list won't be too far on the Horizon.

Does anyone know if its possible to get the Sporto Emblem refinished in Gold? Or does anyone have a gold one they want to swap or sell?

Re: 1970 911E Sporto Resto - Seized Engine Time

Post by 8bit-ash »

This weekend was finally time to see what was going on inside the engine. Its been rock solidly seized, I don't know whether it was driven into the garage back in 1985 or dragged in after catastophic engine failure.
So far its come apart pretty well, 5 mildly seized cylinders came off with only a bit of persuasion. I've got one which is giving me a little more trouble which is where my tear down ends for a couple of weeks. I've left penetrating fluid in there to hopefully do its job. Looking forward to splitting the case and hopefully not seeking a corroded very expensive piece of Magnesium scrap.

With all 6 pots with slight corrosion I would think the engine would feel solid if turning over attempted with just a 17mm ring spanner on the crank pulley bolt?

Seems the new release fluid of choice is diesel.

My pulley bolt is 19mm is that normal? Had a very mild lever with a breaker bar but not sure what is considered acceptable force to get it moving. I've had some diesel on the go. I've left a sparing amount of Gibbs in there atm, some hot oil got two of the others going.

nearly 100 hours deep now.

I've been trying to decide whether to Dip or Blast the shell, I've had one friend tell me to blast and one to dip. Both are estimating the metalwork for me. Opinions seem to be 6 of one and half a dozen of the other in the internet. Going to havr a good look at enviro-strips stand at the classic show next week.

I've also opened the case almost definitely for the first time since it was built. I had a bit of resistance from the Piston/rod Pins but everything else seemed to come apart pretty well. Time now to clean everything up and get it to someone for inspection/machining.
I'm tempted to leave the head studs in place as they appear to be good. I'm not an expert here so if anything in the photo's below look suspect please let me know.

I'm still spending hours searching for good deals and buying up shiney bits when I see them. This weeks deal -

If this car was ever owned by a Mr Challoner in Twickenham then I might have some past history details for you.

Spent Christmas getting busy scraping underseal off the underside of the car. No nasty surprises thankfully. The KB's have been off before which must have been in the late 70's before the car was even 10 years old.

Hi,

Not a lot of progress over the past couple of months. I had originally planned on a friend undertaking the metalwork but I came to my senses and figured I needed to get in touch with the master to see if he would take on my shell. Thankfully Barry said yes so i'm now waiting patiently in the queue for my turn.

I'm going to take my case and engine bits to Rob Walkers as soon as I get a chance to get the machining done then hopefully start to build it back up over summer.

Once the shells out of the way hopefully at the end of Autumn i can concentrate on making all the dirty bits clean, powder coating, re plating, etc.
