Hi Tim

The only standard blue in 69 MY was Ossi blue although there were four special order blues.
You at probably going to have to see deep into your front bulkhead somewhere to see the original colour.
Depends how well it was prepared for repaint.

Mike

The inside of the smugglers box has an 'interesting' metallic green\blue colour that doesn't strike me as an original porsche colour, but I guess it could have been one of the special order paints.

I don't really want to pay for a COA seeing as the engine and gearbox are definately not original, doesn't seem much point.

thanks
Tim
Welcome do DDK :)

Don't take this the wrong way but do you know if the shell is original?

What Gary says, it's certainly had a lot of graft inwardly to make it look like an SC.

At this stage I have not found anything that indicates a re-shell, the chassis number has not been tampered with as far as I can tell, and you can see where the mods have been done. It's definately not an SC shell, but there must have been a donor car for all the parts, possibly an accident damaged one?? Probably will never know.
What's a knee bar?

cheers
Tim

Having just read the entirety of your 'Eve' Barn Find thread Mike I now know what a knee bar is, and will drop it at the next opportunity.
I may need some help de-coding the number though.

I've also been thinking of posting on here again to get some advice from you chaps, so I guess now is as good time as any.
Since I started this thread I haven't done much with my car except get it on the road and really enjoy driving it.
It was surprisingly easy to get it through the initial MOT and I've been amazed at how well the car drives. Last summer I was working near Southampton and had great fun commuting to work a few times a week, 30 miles 'cross country'. Unfortunately I am now working in London so don't get to do that anymore.

Last month I did a charity track day at Goodwood, which is not far from where I live. Again I was just amazed how well the car performed, and by the end of the day I was actually putting together some pretty tidy laps.

However....

I have some quite serious oil leaks going on. By the end of the day at Goodwood there was a lot of smoke coming off the back of the car when she was pushed hard. I think they actually waved me in early because they thought I was about to drop oil all over the circuit!

When I got the car it had fully synthetic oil in and was leaving small puddles on the garage floor. I quickly read up on here and switched to the favoured brand of mineral racing oil and that almost completely stopped the static leaks. But now when the engine is hot the leaks return and I get an oily film all over the back of the car after a drive.

So, the question is, is it worth bothering to try and patch up oil leaks with the engine in the car? Or is it like fighting a losing battle and I should just take the engine out and strip it down?

I do want to rebuild the engine at some point anyway. It's a 2.7 CIS at the moment and as long as the case is OK, I'd like to put PMO's on it and build it into a 200hp fast road engine.
I'd do this myself and take time over it, so the car would be coming off the road for a while if I decide to go ahead.

any thoughts and advice appreciated.
thanks
Tim

Engine rebuild timing is a tricky one, if it runs well and the oil pressure is ok then there is no rush. Enjoy the car.

It's worth having a good look to see if there is anything obvious leaking (rocker covers, oil return tubes etc) but if it's coming out of the exhaust pipe during driving rather than from around it then it's going to be a bigger job.

I reached the point last September where the smoke was becoming a bit of a joke (think Bond deploying a smoke decoy....) and I got over the denial that the oil pressure gauge was playing up... :)

DIY build is no small task, and it's still expensive, but eminently possible.

If you chose to do it there is plenty of advice and support available on here!

is the oil mainly on the offside ? Check the engine oil cooler. mine was dry when static, but leaking when running as the cooler is under pressure. it's an expensive item but a lot less than an engine rebuild.

Thanks both, oil pressure is fine and I don't think the smoke\oil is coming from the exhaust, I think the oil was burning on the outside of the exhaust. However it's difficult to know without someone else watching from behind.

The engine was supposedly rebuilt 3000 miles ago, so the rocker covers and oil return tubes look OK to me.
Oil cooler is a good shout, thanks Tim, I'll check that out. Guess it's still an engine out job to replace?

No , I just did mine with a mixture of ramps, trolley jacks, rear wheel off for access and took the cooler out the top :)

Well done. I'm surprised you can do that.

With regard to the leaks outside the exhaust it's most likely rocker cover gaskets or one of the rocker shafts. Tiny amounts of oil make masses of smoke.

OK, knee bar dropped. Production no 1091076.
Who can decode that for me?
Thanks
Tim

That production number confirms it's a 1969 911 Coupe shell - you can't tell whether it was a T, E or S though as the production number was stamped before the shell became model specific.
