996 GT3.1 or .2 strikes me as great value compared to the earlier cars - where does that leave us early car people though?

Not driven the GT2 but owned a GT3 MK1 (I would post a picture...if I knew how!)

GT3 was lovely. Great engine, steering, handling and feedback. Didn't take it on track so can't comment on brakes. Many years later drove Yoda's MK2. Difficult to compare after so many years. MK2 felt quicker. However, personally I think the MK1 looks better, has some advantages being the first GT3 and is anyway quick enough (too quick) for the road. Might depend how you use it (ie how many trackdays).

My local independent have this one available shortly:

If any of their other cars I've seen recently are anything to go by the photos will not do the car justice.

Tempted to upgrade myself.

Go over there now and tell them that silver dials aren't standard. Quick.

You're correct of course, Sam. Such blatant errors would never have happened on your watch, I know.

had the 996 gt2 at 911box inspected 18k miles and 60 grand.. mark 1.. only original paint left on it was the roof ... gt3 mk1 for "value" best choice..last hand made car at weissach etc.. 996 gt3 mkii apparently a better car.. havent driven either to be fair but just bought a 996 gt3 rs

rumour mill says porsche will no longer make a gt2 variant so on that alone expect values climb..

either car will bring much pleasure im sure and probably add value in the long run too..

Assuming that I was silly enough to consider buying a 'water-cooled' (back satan) GT3/GT2 and was motivated to have a PPI undertaken at a Porsche dealership, what questions should I be asking and would a compression/leak-down test be necessary for a GT3/GT2?

Additionally as someone who still hasn't grasped the concept of mechanical points, could some kind sole explain the principals of 'over-rev ' data and how this data should be interpreted for a 996 GT3/GT2 - I understand that there are three components to look for:
  • Range 1 (ignitions/hour)
    Range 2 (ignitions/hour)
    Operating Hours
Finally what happens to this data if the engine has been rebuilt - would the computer be re-set?

Thx

talks re 997 (5 ranges) though 996 (2 ranges) same rationale applies

Basically:

range 1 = ignitions at the limiter (ie when accelerating, limiter does it's job)
range 2 = ignitions at speeds OVER the limiter. this is bad. IE over-rev (change down too early and clatter pistons into valves.

hours can broadly be tallied with miles

Also important to see when, vs total hours, any range 1 or really just 2 occurs; if v recent, may have not had time to see if any lasting damage, if yonks ago and all fine then - err - all's fine.

Ideally do not buy a car with RR 2, and consider RR 1 fine (after all, who hasn't clattered into the limiter pulling out of the pits / side road etc....)

that's the laymans version.
