914 steering wheel on 911?

Hi chaps,

the 914 & 914-6 steering wheels do have the same number of splines, but the length of the splines and hence the wheels are different to take account of the different type of steering column length and turn signal cancelling lug (!) - 914 had vw column and stalks, 914-6 is different but not sure if they had the same steering column as early 911......

I know this from various experiments with aftermarket steering bosses...
(sad but true)....

914-6 has completely different number of splines and will not retro fit to any other car.

it is pre 1972 & post 1972 914-4 steering wheels that have the same number of splines but different spline lengths as they have different steering column designs....

My next weeks installment is wheel nuts through the ages...

All 914/4 & 914/6 wheels have the same number of splines & all of them will fit on to an early (pre-July '74) 911 steering column.

I have a :

1970 plastic 914/4 wheel fitted to my '72 T
1971 leather 914/6 wheel fitted to my '71 E/RS
1973 imitation leather 914/4 wheel fitted to my '73 E--->RS 'conversion' *

* soon to be replaced with a 914/6 leather-rimmed wheel

The information on this subject in Brett Johnson's book is incorrect.
