Mrs B picked up some of the chrome bit so we could clean them and maybe replate them. I'm going to have a go at the back grill but it's not clear how you undo it. In particular the cars that you can see in the photo which are hold the mesh onto the back of the grid? Any ideas. Plus should be mesh be black and the grill zinced?



I was a bit surprised to see the car outside. My initial worried was the electronics getting rained on since it isn't sealed anymore. Are thinking about this again. I'm not sure it is will be insured if they are leaving it outside. A quick call on Monday is needed to see.

MT stripped it but not much has happen apart from that! Last week they were waiting for a quote from a welder and 10 days later they are still waiting for the quote or not.

The rear grille has six 'through' rods from top to bottom with domed nuts on each end. Undo all six nuts from either the top edge or bottom edge an then grab the nut at the other end and pull the rod right out. There are spacers between each bar that the rod passes through and these will all fall out as you pull the rods through. When you have all six rods out the bars will all separate and you are left with the top and bottom rails of the grille with the mesh attached. You cannot separate the mesh without extra work and it's not worth it if your grille is not in too bad a condition. The mesh is easily damaged so be careful. I simply cleaned up all the bars, nuts and spacers with Gibbs (there's that product again!) and it brings them up lovely and protects them too. You can't mix the bars up. If you look closely they are all numbered at one end. When you have finished feed the rods back through the bars and spacers one at a time and it will all come back together easily. In addition there are eight fixing bolts which fit between the top and bottom rails and the last bar. These are often stripped of their threads. These go through your holes in the engine lid. I replaced all mine. They are hard to get and not cheap so clean in the same way and re-use if you can.
I reassembled with cotton gloves on to keep the grille clean and fingerprint free.

Thanks Mike this was the bit I was trying to figure out so I will leave the mesh attached.

Also, be aware that the rods which pass through the slats are made of aluminium (at least they are/were on my '66) and the nuts at each end corrode onto them. It's easy to snap the threaded ends off the rods (ask me how I know...), but you can buy threaded stainless-steel rod that solves the problem and is invisible once built up. Got mine of eBay, with matching acorn nuts

Agree with the guy´s above, those rods ends snap fairly easily so be aware.

Simple job otherwise!

I'm starting to think I will try to clean up without taking it apart firstly to see how it comes out!

Gibbs order. It looks a bit like WD40! However, it appears that I could of ordered a cap too. Maybe next time. NOT!

How do I get the mirror out of the wing mirror?





I thought about hitting it with a screw driver on the back but I suspect that I'm going to crack the mirror.
