Yep standard 912 and 911 had the same body - narrow, short wheel base up to the end of 68 - from 69 onwards long wheel base with a slight flare on the wheel arches.
I know you're looking at different engine ideas at the moment, I thought this might be of interest - Elliot's VW Type 4 based unit:

those rear arches look good its a shame mine looks so cool or i would fit some and paint it, type 4 engines are quite heavy so am thinking type 1 is a better option addressing the handling concerns already raised

the project taken a turn for the worst and its not here yet. In fact that is the whole problem it has not set off yet despite having paid for it 5 weeks ago

decided def sticking with propper engine unless its totally kippered, i am gonna leave it in california till jan so it gets here around march/april time next year, i figured its better off over there than in the snow and rain here while i finish my van off

Sounds like a good idea. Have a look at Jury's restoration thread for some inspiration too.
