Should of just put it through yourself and saved the money for the interia. I'm sure Garages and Insurance companies have a licience to charge what they like.....

Paul,
This isn't on really. Were you explicit with them about the work and budget? I couldn't get away with charging double for agreed amounts of work or changing the scope of work and expecting paying for it. The main point is that I wouldn't dream of doing either without getting instructions from my client. The car game is no different to any other business. There seems to be an acceptance that this is what happens in the car industry, and it really isn't.
If this is the case I would fight your corner. 'Engagement payment' can only be an advance against the work surely? Seems to me there wasn't a massive amount to do to your car to get it to IVA?

There wasn't much to do but they have managed to run up a hug bill. I.was expecting to pay for maybe 3 or 4 days work but they managed to spend 64 hrs on it. Sent an email just awaiting a response but boss is away now for few days.

Yeah Bosses are always away when decisions need to be made!!
Just seems that an agreed estimate means nothing these days.
I would deffinatly stick by your guns on this one as they shoud contact you with regard to any extra work that they have to do above what they have quoted for. Well in theory anyway....
