Unfortunately Lord Mexborough's collection isn't quite what it used to be. A lot of the cars have been sold.

1974 911 RS 3.0

Post by gmundcars »

About 8 years ago, a business collegue in the Classic Car auction world asked me to meet up with him (quite a few hours drive away), to visit a private collectors address to view a few Porsches that may be for sale. My pal was in the middle of trying to secure a bunch of cars (Lotus Cortina, Ford GT40, 2 x new RS200 Frog eye Fords, a Lancia Stratos and a strange looking Peugeot 205 with it's engine where the back seat would be !) to be auctioned, and the collector wanted the Porsche's buying from him, hence my involvement (luckily for me). Upon arrival, it's a neat rural setting with many barns and outbuildings full of rare collectors cars. In terms of Porsches my first view is of a pale yellow 73' RS in pale yellow with reg number 44 FLY (i think), but that's not for me because it been sold already. I view and buy a red 964 RS and a red Audi RS2, and spot a chunky 911 under a cover. Upon inspection it appears to be a rhd 74' 3.0 RS in white with gold fuchs, but has an Irish reg number ? Upon asking the collector about the car it soon appears it is VVB 3M, the ex Nick Faure / Porsche UK road racer, he bought the car in 1976 from the McCartney brothers rallying team in Ireland for £12,000 (a samll fortune in 1976). The car had not been taxed or MOT'd for about 10 years. To cut a long story short (easily 5 years), I tried on many occasions to broker a deal to buy the car. On one occation I had agreed a deal, arrived at the house, got "VVB" out of the barn to exchange contracts and take the car away, to be told by the collector that he could not let the car go just yet, it "looked too nice" to let go, and he had had it 30 plus years (longer than his kids he often told me !). Eventualy a year or so ago I brokered a deal to buy the car, and now it resides in the UK, now waring VVB 3M, and fully restored. How lucky to be able to step into dark damp barns some times !

Having had the pleasure of trying to negotiate with said gentleman when I bought one of the cars from his collection last year,
let's just say I now understand why he's a billionaire and I'm a poor man!

I used to work for Mr JCB - everyday he'd get flown into work in his helicopter and land 100 yds away from the office, and he'd have one from his very fine collection sat waiting for him next to the helipad so he could drive over to the office! how the half live eh?!

Doesnt Bamford have a vast selection of classic cars, mainly Ferraris. When I was overseas there was a programme on the Speed channel with Alan De Cadinet where he looked at specific classic Ferrari's, one per episode and the majority were owned by Bamford.

I also understand he has a semi-race track on his estate as shown in these programmes to enjoy his cars which is where De Cadinet drove them

I have also seen some of that series with De Cadenet, and yes itis the Bamford test track.

I have had the pleasure of driving round it in one of the Bamford vehicles.

Unfortunately it wasn't a classic ferrari, it was a 16 tonne rubber tyred excavator, max speed of 20mph

gmundcars: "he bought the car in 1976 from the McCartney brothers rallying team in Ireland" .

Hello,

That year is not correct , Dessie McCartney used that car into at least the spring of 1977. And he did not even get it until the later part of 1976 himself.

I cant' access photobucket at work, but if you click on the link this is the type of vehicle i was charging round his test track in. The track had a measured mile on it and its used for speed tests for the excavators.
