failed mine last Saturday :( on what was effectively a newly built car for last years test, though I'd only had time to check all the lights were ok before hand.

Failed on O/S/F top balljoint and both rear wheel bearings....

Tightened up three nuts and booked it in again this Saturday !!

The rear castle nuts (held by split pin) on both sides had gone from >200 lb/ft to less than 20 as things had clearly bedded in over the first 900 miles. (new bearing, seals, drums, ...)

The front balljoint is not quite so certain, but I can't believe it was the balljoint worn after only 900 miles. The nylock nut attaching the steering knuckle to the upper balljoint was again not as tight as it should still have been and I couldn't detect any noticably play compared with the N/S/F (which passed) once i'd tighted it up (plenty before).

Fingers crossed for Saturday... :?:

Mental note to MoT car again next Spring so that this becomes a winter exercise, outside of the speedster driving season! 8)

are the ball joints stock VW ones or the 'lowered' long travel ball joints?

I know of quite a few occasions where new ball joints have not been installed correctly (movement in a different plane to that required) into the trailing arms & this has caused them to wear quickly

They're stock ones as my cars isn't lowered that much.

Fitted by Beetlelink, who know what they are doing.

Fingers crossed it was the loose nut - I can't detect excessive play now. Only the MoT test will tell :?

Had I mistakenly thought that Fraser had managed to acquire a Cayenne running gear test mule fitted with an early 911 bodyshell :)

Next MOT time I'll probably regret having said this but in 3 years the only MOT failure I've suffered was for a slightly bald tyre.....and this is my daily car.......

Had my 'Carrera KS' (everyone's got an RS – I just want to be different) MOT'd yesterday and it failed on the headlamp beams. I'd changed the lenses from LHD to RHD type but the beam cut-off still worked in the wrong direction. Turns out that the reflector/bulb holder is not the same for LHD and RHD cars – the RHD version puts the bulb over at a slight angle to change the angle of the cut-off on dipped. Taped lenses got the car a pass, but I learnt something new – I always thought the bem shape was set solely by the lenses!

Registration number now changed to suit new look car, too. How about "RSR 888H" – well, I like it! See you all at Brands!

There is a discussion on this same subject on the PCGB forum, in the 964RS section.

I was unaware of the difference between the H4 LHD & RHD units. I think I've been brainwashed by the VW side of things for too long

Does anyone know if the H1 units differed too?
