Cheers All,
I seemed to have put two and two together and made 5 on what I had read and what was on the adverts. I let this sway my original plans.
Lots of good advise, and now the hunt is on. I'll be chasing as good as I can get pre'73 E or S. Will let you know how I get on, and also pick peoples brains as and when etc.

Just to add though

I'd ignore the model & just search for the best condition car you can find. Any well looked after sorted early 911 will give you much more fun & enjoyment than a 'bad / cheap' shed you buy just because it is an E or an S

for your Budget i would be looking for a very good 911T. superb cars
that should give you no bother.
imho, the 2.2ltr is a great motor

There's an ivory S on the for sale board ( search for Bruce ) within your price range. Looks like a nice car - although I've only seen the pictures ....
Whooopps! - just read Gary71's post -
There is, I think a silver 911S on pistonheads - which has been discussed and seen by Bert Roex, that may also be in your price range, but that one is LHD.
