I agree. Too much hassle. You either want a car or dont. and for that price you cant get picky about air vents.

Tomorrow (tuesday) I have a chap coming up from London on Thomas the Tank Engine to inspect the car for his own uses.
Taking all advice in......... I think Helen is right. "If I am offered a Deposit then politely refuse and inform the potential Buyer that it is his when he funds the purchase price and drives it away. If, in the meantime sombody elses purchase price is handed over then, sadly, they'll get the keys and the V5 instead."
Regarding the Deposit from last week " I am still on the fence". I told him if he was patient and informed by this weeks outcome then, based on his future communication being "toned-down" I would make a decision. His response was to continue to be heavy handed but imply "this is the advice I've recieved and not my own words" !!
Huuuuummmmm.. I didn't warm to that style of response either.
The saga continues.... but I am now over my initial distress, thanks to you guy's, and I'm starting to regain my humour over this episode..

I wouldn't get yourself too stressed. You have to be very patient selling classic cars like this! As far as the deposit is concerned, you're the one in control, so he should be grovelling for it!

Thanks mate. I shall keep a clear head. ........ and regarding the deposit... your dammmn right,, the more I think about it .... the clearer it gets.
At the end of the day I have had to write endless unnecessary e-mails to confused potential purchasers "Is it For Sale .. has it gone" followed by the understandable sceptisism of "why did he pull out" then I have to labour the point that the bloke..... to this day... still has not seen my car in the flesh.
On damage limitation this abortive purchase has cost me time and potential buyers.
Lets hope tomorrows visit is positive..

If you did what you suggest I would be horrified. For a potential buyer to drive a distance to buy a car , offer a £ 2000 cash deposit and promise to be back with a bank draft or a bill of exchange endorsed by the bank within 48 hours only to be told "I dont want your deposit and car remains for sale until you pay in full" puts the buyer in an impossible position.
If he returns with a draft made out to you and you tell him you just sold the car to someone else the bank will not reimburse him without tremendous hassle because the money would now be legally yours. The only option for the buyer would be to travel to pick up the car with cash in his pocket !
You did the deal correctly to start with the way millions of deals have done and you should keep the full deposit. You are in the right even if he did not see the car !

Good Point.
The last thing I want to do is upset the chap tomorrow. I think he is doing a "fleeting visit" by train London - Rugby .... then back. (Returning by train).
If he offers a deposit as his commitment + the fact that he has paid for his and his colleagues train fayre...... the last thing I want to do is suggest "he puts his money where his mouth is". He really wont warm to that.
I guess I shall have to remind him via a receipt that the Deposit is a commitment "to buy" and NOT "hold" until a pre-determined date for collection and balance of payment.

Derek: Yep..... Maybe this is the best solution. I think we have found a route I am comfortable with.

Derek,
You asked, just before Ragley Hall, to send photo's of my 914 when I get it. I've been trawling DDK !!!!
...... look at the historic posts of "Dannyboy" (end of year 2006) it's that one...

Someone who is that uncooperative doesn't deserve such a nice car. If he was genuinely interested he would have done A:His homework before putting a deposit down, and B:Everything in his power to check the car out in the flesh as quickly as possible.
If he is being pishy about the deposit, I would deduct the cost of having to readvertise and give him the rest back. Sounds like you are best getting him out your hair asap.
Oh and welcome to 914 ownership

If I was buying a car privately and put down a deposit on a car, I would consider it a full on commitment to buy the car. If you put a deposit down on a new car from a dealership, they would certainly expect you to pay up when the car arrived!

Hi Ross,
The inspection yesterday went superbly. My little lightweight got a sterling response and passed on all counts. With parties being aware that she was formerly a LHD Californian import and converted to RHD and also originally Aztec Gold and now Mittel Grau (Metallic Pewter would be accurate).
Tomorrow (friday) the potential buyer is going to phone me with an offer based on the outcome of the inspection. If he offers close to the asking price then I shall accept and make up the difference with the deposit held from the rude chap who messed me about last weekend.
So....... at this present time the car is kind of sold "subject to agreeable terms".
I am also mindful that the "rude chap" still has the ability to contact me, as I am holding his deposit, and pay the balance and collect on friday as per the terms agreed with him. However he did write "sell your car to who you like as I am not going to proceed" so I guess I am selling on his behalf to a degree.
I shall post the outcome as and when it materialises.
If she is still for sale then I shall naturally let you know.
cheers
