If you get the engine number I can look it up and tell you when it was made.
Unless you were racing the car the drums will be good enough. The main reason the disc brakes are better is the fact that they don't fade under prolonged braking.
If you are going to keep the car then modifying can be fun. :)
It only becomes a problem when you want to sell it again. :(

Now im even more confused, I do like the white one with black stripe.

Is there anyone with a good argument to keep the car standard?

I do hope I havnt started something here

It will be a long time before the car is done so I dont need to make an immediate decision.

Would it be sacrilegious to change the drums for discs, tune the engine and go for a performance exhaust but leave everything else standard?

My car's standard and I look at modified cars with a slightly envious eye.

Remember it's you car.

Discs, tune up and performance exhausts, can all be changed back, so I don't think that would effect anything too much. Sounds cool, good luck.

Also those kind of modifications could have been done at the time, it's not like putting a modern engine in or anything like that.

Steven's right. The best mods are the ones you can change quite easily...........just in case you end up not liking them!
There are some cool cars around though. 8)

Thanks guys, these points do bring me onto another question.

What sort of power output can I potentially get from the standard engine and what is achievable with if you go to town?
I know its quite a broad question but as I am quite new to the engine I dont really have a clue, Ive been used to tuning blown 4 pots up to now.

Maybe someone could suggest a good book for me to swat up on?

that would have to be the Meastro's guides surely?
Whats been said quite a few times is Porsche engines seem to be massively high cost to tune up, and you dont get that much more from them.
Most people say use a VW core as basis, and spend the money on tuning up the VW unit, keeping the Porsche unit as standard come sale time etc etc. VW works out far, far cheaper for a lot more bhp, and the bank manager need never know.
Once you have done this, you would have a valid reason for potentially upgrading the brakes too. Although I would expect a good set of drums will be just as usable as a set of discs, unless you are really thrashing it !

As for doing non standard stuff, just keep it subtle and sympathetic to the period, thats the key to winning over people !!

I agree, usually more than 100 bhp is going to lots of money. Why not try the Super 90 as it is before trying to get more power as it is.
The Maestro's books are definitely the best, but can be expensive as they are out of print. The workshop manual is useful but expensive as well. In fact say the word Porsche and it's expensive!

Im not after silly power just a bit more get up and go. Dont really fancy the idea of the beetle engine as I wanted to keep the car matching numbers for shows. I was planning on selling the super 90 engine as it would add a few more pennies into the pot for the restoration and I just dont like the idea of putting a non original engine in the car.

What difference is there between my engine and the super 90? Could I modify my engine to that sort of spec without re-mortgaging the house?
