Its a distinct possability, may pop up to Loch Tay and say hi, but that is assuming the cars jittery ride has been sorted. (new shocks, bushes, etc.)
I also need to put a few electrical gremlins to bed.

My new Driverside door handle and lock arrives this week, and my recon / used door check straps arrive in a fortnight.

Its coming together but im way too impatient and want all my ordered parts yesterday.

Just got a few bits I've been waiting for.

New drivers sidedoor handle, Door handle gaskets and High/Low beam relay. Went the whole hog and got my Porsche horn push.

A nice easy day tomorrow, I have to -

1. Fit Relay

2. Fit door handle (changing new lock back to original lock) and gaskets

3:lube door and window mechanisms and figure out where window mech is fouling, causing snapped window winders on passenger side door.

4. Fix passenger seat squab.

I hope It'll be an easy day of minor fixes, but I may find out otherwise as the day progresses.

I have been busy over the last week or so.

Dash and fuse board wiring now sorted and working as are front lights. I still have a short somewhere at back of car but thats a job for this weekend.

Rebulit door check strap mechanisms (Thanks for the parts Jonathan). I had a total of Six machanisms (including my originals) in varying states of complettion and wear. I managed to get a very decent looking set from the parts




The front end is still bothering me. Very harsh ride and not that much fun. I have noticed that the car has been lowered and have a bumpstop kit ready to fit which may aleviate the problem. I am , however, considering putting the cars ride height back up a little tightening the torsion bars a little.

Weren't those springs a bit of a sod? Those door straps have a couple of nice bumps left -mine were worn flat.
What shocks have you got up front? Only way to tell is to take the damper out from the strut and have a look? If they're KYB's then the ride will be very unforgiving.

The way the car has been dropped seems to be that the torsion bars have been let to their least frogiving as there is alot of thread showing (this is according to my garage)

In the past when lowering cars I have bought specialist springs or used drop spindles or a drop tube front axle. The 914 is all a bit new to me, but none of these methods seem to apply to what has been done.

I don't know 914 suspension , but have you checked:

The shocks aren't bottoming out?

Have the ball joints reached the limits of their movement?

would love to see this car, hope you can make it to Loch Tay

914 front suspension is almost identical in design to a 911 (up to '89). Adjusting the torsion bar would be the normal thing to do when lowering the ride height.
There are dropped spindles around but there is quite a lot of work involved and are therefore $$

Think I may just have to raise suspension back to the norm.

Been a while since I updated the details on my progress.

I managed to fit a set of bumpsteer spacers and these made a little difference to the harsh ride. Steering geometry is still way out though. Car goes in to CLCM in Edinburgh to get steering geometry,toe in/out, castor and camber etc sorted (not sure how much of that can be adjusted on a 14?). CLCM are well known amongst the Hillclimb and Sprint guys up here in Scotland.

Also had fitted a rebuilt set of pedals. What a difference!

I am now trying to figure out some electrical problems which keep cropping up. Think Its down to a poor earth but I will know more this week.

Need to get electrics sorted out so I can fit the new stereo. I am going to fit it in cage under the dash, No way am i cutting the dash. Any ideas on how to go about this?

I fitted one inder the dash in the centre using a plastic DIN holder and an extra bracket. It bolts to the metal supports for the dash. It's set quite back meaning it's well hidden from view but is a bugger to see when you're driving!

Just a quick update.

After trying to figure out how to stealth a new stereo, I decided to take the easy route. 1 x plastic din mount, some screws and bolts and hey presto. I didnt want it to be situated to far under the dash, so it is now easy to reach when driving. I think it looks ok

I found that alpine do a set of 6x4 150w speakers which seem to do a grand job. They are only 39mm in depth, so dont foul/touch on heat ducting. I cut some 5mm ply to make a mounting plate and used original screw holes to secure. All pretty standard fair.

Electrical problems now all sorted (one of which caused by a dodgy bulbs filaments shorting).

I just need to get hold of some 5 inch spots for the front of the car now. Think Ill leave the rest till next year.


(Unless i manage to source either a 2.0 (4) engine , or a 2.4 (6) at a decent price. Remember i am scottish and about to become a student again so am tighter than two coats of paint. )

Took the 914 out as transport to my mates garage where we were working on his 911. We are getting It ready for him racing at Knockhill this Sunday coming ( yes, it is during the DDK trip up here to Scotland).

Weather was realy nice so here are some up to date pics. Looks the same as ever, only very shiny.






This week I will need to source some new strut inserts for the front, after closer inspection and testing, there is no Damping on the front at all. Looks like its still running original strut inserts too

New front strut inserts fitted today. Corners are fun, and I dont lose my fillings as I go over bumps now.

Going to treat the car to new seatbelts. Any suggestions as to where i can get a set or have originals rewebbed at a reasonable cost?
