What makes a 'drivers' car? In my personal opinion one that is perhaps compromised for the road but which rewards the driver every time you get in the interesting seat. One which may be a pain to drive in traffic - but once the road opens up, enables you to find the edge of the handling envelope - flatters you as you learn your craft and makes you feel like you're able to enjoy the act of driving.

The M3 is a road car - with the possible exception of the E30 M3 (which was a hoot to drive and rev'd sweetly with lovely turn in and delicate balance on the throttle) - the rest have all played on the 'original' - even the original M6, which holds a dear place in my hear - loved mine - they're all road cars and GT cars at that - wonderful for pounding accross Europe and hooning around but not a lot else. M1? Different kettle of tuna and one of my all time favourite cars.

Go look at any trackday - you'll see half a dozen M3's out there and they all wallow on turn in and snake under hard braking - even the CSL (and yes, I had one ) was a flawed gem - too hard in the places it should be and too soft to be a serious weapon - I ran in the Britcar against a race prepared CSL and it was quick(ish) on the straights - lost him on the twiddly bits. You could see he had to really think about braking points and he had some enormous discs on there (Alcon? AP).

The Carrera however is a supreme car - best ones are the ones without any gizmos - headlight washers, roof, electric windows - pure and simple but with over 200bhp on tap and, if set up properly - and by this I mean replacing aging suspension and tyres - they are incredible - they allow you to push the car into the corners and, with the right technique, slide them through and out.

I owned, for a very short period, a really lovely low km's silver LHD Carrera 3.0 with no roof, wind up windows and no aircon - man it went and with the new suspension and tyres fitted it was a driver's car - pure and simple.

The M's - with the possible exception of the E30 and the CSL were road / touring cars - very comfortable but because of this they're compromised as a 'drivers' car.

For me? No question - 911 every single time

I was just thinking about the 996 GT3 Mk II. No traction control, stiff suspension, no automatic, no awd, no fun in traffic.

Thats what makes it beautiful! Of course the same could be said of the 2.7 RS, but since we were talking about newer cars...

Hi Bill - I'm lucky enough to have both - the Mk.II is a wonderful car - alive, beautifully poised, sweet engine - but the 2.7RS is soooo involving - but as a modern, the Mk.II is excellent - and I can't see the reason to blow £30,000 more just to have the latest 997 GT3
