Go subi. I've just cost out my 1303 project and it's a winner for sure. £3.5 all up , everything and thats including motor , ecu , new bellhousing , a bus box and complete 944 suspension. You don't need the latter 2 so even cheaper. Speak to Andy at TSR. Sooooo helpful and has everything you need. Also this site is great ,

Type 4 stuff is great , i run a built 2.1 but ££'s for power you laughing. A 2.5 turbo legacy motor stripped of aircon etc = 224 bhp!!!!! If you want that out an aircooled motor your talking megabucks. Plus a STOCK subi motor will handle 100bhp of NOS no problem if you want warp speed. 11's here you come!

I bought the entire Legacy I needed for the Turbo EJ20 quad cam motor for my van for £200.
I'm still saving up for the rest of the conversion bits though

Seems to be a big vote for Scooby doos ! What's an EJ15 ? Is that the standard Impreza unit ? I'm following some of the links you've posted. Thanks.
Nitrous and Chevy V8s all sound fun but quite apart from the cost (getting close to 911 territory) I'd be getting into areas I don't understand and I don't want to go just for max power anyway (although I do live about 5 miles from Santa Pod - it is very tempting). I'll leave the laughing gas to you youngsters and straight line jockeys. I'm more interested in 'usable' power - whatever that is - and good handling in the twisty bits.
Why are Chevy V8s so popular (as opposed to Ford, Chrysler etc) ? Whenever I've looked under the bonnet of a Yank tank the engine has been the size (and probably weight) of a house. Is the Chevy what's known as a 'small block' ? Does that mean it's a physically compact unit ? Can someone explain please.

small blocks are lighter than you think, I remember reading in Practical Classics (don my cloth cap) a while back and one of the writers had an Mk1 Capri 3.0 V6 which he swapped out for a Ford V8, apparently it was that much lighter that the suspension had to be lowered to suit. It also costs a fraction of the price to rebuild.
I'm not up on Yankee V8s but I alway thought small blocks where the ones up 5.0l or so and then big blocks are 6.0l and beyond

I've just spent 3 years with a N/A 2.0 subaru Forester .... The engine is great, very rev happy with all teh power at the top end. Does lack in low down torque. I think the N/A is 120 bhp.
Wether to go with a turbo motor or N/A depends on which you prefer driving ( i'm not a great turbo fan)

Keep the center of gravity low as Porsche intended. Stay with a flat four.

The Impreza type fours are starting to look more and more attractive - but 6 pots would be nicer. So my favourite at the moment is the Legacy/SVX H6 which comes in 2.7,3.0 and even 3.3 litres. As Derek says 'keep the cg low', it's a logical step from somebody else's flat 6, it's been done before (look at item 170029905203 on ebay.com (the American one) so it would be possible and still be distinctive. It just comes back to finding one ...... I should be doing a trial fit with the Alfa V6 next month. Depending on how that goes I may proceed with that or start looking for an H6.

I was having a quick look in Porsche Post this week, and you can get a Boxster 2.7 engine for about £2500.
Has anyone heard of a boxster engine transplant in a 914...?

Things I have learned owning a 4 and an 8.
Good News:
1: Fore/aft cg about the same on both cars.
2: Small block Chev V8 weighs just about the same as a Porsche flat 6. Add radiator and coolant at the front and it's just about 50/50.
3: A quality medium h/p rebuild on a small block is about $1000. Try that with a type 4 or heaven forbid 6.
Bad news: c/g is about 18" higher. Feels like it's going to come around and slap you. And it does.
Have ridden in a couple of Suby conversions. If you're not a purist, this is the best combo. Unless you want to send me one of those, Racecraft!!!
