DDK - Die Deutschen Klassiker

Hi there,
This is my first post, so please be gentle. I don't yet have a 911, but its on the shopping list, and backdating appeals greatly. The use of grp wings etc to lighten the car at the same time makes alot of sense as well. However I can't get my tiny mind around what the use of a fibreglass front end will do to the handling.
The 911 is already biased towards its tail, and making the engine lighter is not an option, but surely making the front end lighter will bias the weight distribution further towards the back of the car, thus making the chances of going through a hedge ackwards that much greater?
I'm sure I'm being a bit thick, and there are lots of clever solutions, but could someone please explain them to me.

Scotal, you can still take a lot of weight out the rear of a 911 (sound deadening, rear seats, carpets, aluminium engine lid, rear bumper in grp, swopping aircleaner, etc for lighter items) which all adds up. The stuff you hear about disappearing backwards into a hedge at the sight of a bend though is myth. The 911 was (is) one of the best handling sports cars if driven right. check out latest copy of 911 & Porsche World for some inspiration on back-dating.... cheers, Steve

Glad to hear it, I hoped there'd be a solution. I've seen the 911 & PW stuff, thoroughly enjoyed that, although my budget will be a little lower than the 60K the belgians charge for a full house RSR build.

would also suggest you start with the earliest car you can as they got fat and overweight as they aged....

Also depends on the car's purpose - if it's a daily driver then start with the latest car you can afford (up to 89 - thereafter the backdate gets bit hard I think)

If it's a week-end car then yes - earlier is lighter
