What year is your car? I think I have a spare 73 manual somewhere.

The article
was in Classic & Sportscar - the Sep '82 edition:

This isn't by any chance Geoff Pollard's replica 916 is it? (complete with 3.3 litre flat 6)

No, it's a genuine 916. The article was from 1982 - at that time Geoff hadn't even started building his RSK replica.. his affiliation with 914's came later.

Speaking as someone who is new to the old-car thing, and I have yet to build any sort of spares stockpile, the things people have collected amaze me!
My car is a '72 model year, which to the best of my knowledge makes a '73 owner's manual appropriate.
What have I got to do to get it off you?

That's the magazine I have here too - I bought it as a back-issue because it is definitely the car in the article I remember, but it's not the article...

Hi Swapped - sorry to disappoint but, as I suspected, the article I have at home is indeed the same one you have
(Andy has it too, by the looks... what sad magazine hoarders we are!).
Even though it's not the article you remember, it's still a good read for 916 fans, so I've scanned it in.
(I have much higher res scans if anyone wants 'em).
Not content with the already tasty 916 performance, the owner fitted wider wheels, and a 2.7 engine:

not fussed on a 916 - prefer one of the two 914/8s instead
now they must have been amazing!
I remember seeing one at the Design museum about 6 years ago mmmmmmmmm..........

Don't be sorry - I still think there's a need for a 'scan repository' - this could be the start...
I've been trying to recall more details about the magazine I saw the article in (I was, from the c&sc date, 13 years old at the time - I'm lucky to be able to remember anything other than the inside of my bedroom and a dog-eared copy of Razz...oh never mind).
I think it was a custom car mag - or something like cars and car conversions, because I remember an article about a Saab 99 with gull-wing doors too, that may or may not have been the same mag / issue.
I have convinced myself that the title of the article was 'the forgotten porsche' (same as the c&sc article) though.

Well, if as it seems to be, the car in question is currently off-white (why?) and under-going restoration here in England, at least I might get the chance to see it in the flesh in due time!
