Aha - easy - then the jubilee clips that hold the flexible pipe from the filler neck to the tank neck are either missing or loose OR the pipe is perished - a quick and cheap fix.

As for the old smell, er, it's an old car Seriously - I'm told that new heat exchangers - esp. SSI's - can change the 'aroma' of a car - Mike (210bhp) has just fitted SSI's to his - any difference in the 'smell' Mike?

I think you should keep the car and get the few minor irritations sorted.

With prices going the way they are you may sell and always regret it when you realise that the 993 isnt everything you ever dreamt of. By that time finding another 2.4S could be very expensive.

I would probably never have bought mine at current prices as I did not then appreciate how much fun they are to run. I had no idea how attached I would be to it and despite the fact that I dont use mine that often when I do its quite liberating.

Newer 911's whilst technically vastly improved are too soul-less to provide the sort of entertainment you get from your S(unless you travel at crazy speeds).

The early boys are right - keep the 2.4s, wind down the windows, open the rear quarter vents, wear a pair of shorts and a thin T-shirt and enjoy! I had jeans and a shirt on whilst I sat in mine for 4 or so hours yesterday and whilst it was a very hot day, it was made bearable by being in an early 911 .

Having recently acquired a 993 I'm staggered by how useable they really are and the aircon works a treat in mine, but could I push it to anywhere near my limits (and I know I can't drive before the jibes start coming in) on a public road? Err no!

If you do decide to swap, pmjt is right on 993 values - for sure mine has lots of miles on it, but it has a very comprehensive history and was well under £26k. I'm sure £15k 993's are not too far away.

so it seems the only other option is an RS, 993's are out of my league (unless you know someone would do a straight swap)and 964's are meant to be a hard ride.

Er, by who? Suppose someone said to you, in 1973, that an original print of the first run of Shakespears plays had gone up as much it ever would - how would you feel when 33 years later another went for £2.85m!!!

Ok, I'm not saying a 2.4S will go up that much but I hope you see my point. They ain't making any more.....

All things have to be taken in context:

2002 a 1996 993 was worth £35k
2002 a 2000 996 was worth £45k

2006 a 1996 993 is worth £25k
2006 a 2000 996 is worth £25k

The argument has always been that 993's hold their money better than 996's - and they do - but they'll never fair well against a 'classic'.

so it seems the only other option is an RS, 993's are out of my league (unless you know someone would do a straight swap)and 964's are meant to be a hard ride.

If your wife doesn't like the 2.4S - she'll positively hate a 964RS - but you'd probably love it

I would keep the 2.4S but....

I recently bought a 1987 911 Turbo 3.3. It has air conditioning, but I need to get that working . It has fabulous performance if you really try, but is "soft and cuddly" when driven gently. It would cost about the same (maybe a bit less) as a mint 993 C2, but I am putting money on it not depreciating any more.

From my own investigations good 993s are holding or slightly increasing in value. For reference contact a specialist like Paragon and ask them how many 993s they have available.

Just caught up with this thread. To answer your question on the ssi's I can tell you that I noticed absolutely no difference in the 'smell' of the car once they were fitted. I did about 300miles with them and thought there might be that 'new' exhaust smell for a while until they had done a few miles but there wasn't even that.
There is a slightly deeper throughty noise though

Well, I am a man who doesnt eat quiches either BUT having just returned from a 600 mile drive with a heater flap stuck on "hell", I do admit to have thought for a moment about a modern car with A/C.

Luckily I saw the light and decided to pop my targa roof off and enjoy the drive. Result:
1. My legs are toasted
2. My head is burned (what do you mean do I still have hair)
3. Dont even mention the girlfriend
4. WHAT ARE YOU SAYING?

But hey, Bentley boys also smelled of Castrol, rubber, sweat and passion so at this stage of my life I can live without beauty-spa pampering and comfort. The moment you need to see your chiropractor more than 3 times a year, you can always switch over to a 993

To deal with point 3: increase spending limit during shopping trip.

Being the owner of a 2.4 S with great daily potential is considered a privilege!
