Cleaning cases
Getting back to cases for minute what does everyone recomend? so far ive used the parts washer treatment and a bit of scotchbrite on the corroded bits on the outside. However doesnt look wonderful, but I suppose thats Mag for you!!!
Once clean does anyone treat the mag with anything to prevent it from getting crusty again or do you rely on a bit of thrown about engine oil (previous owner of this engine had aerosoled silver paint everywhere, yuk
cause now its all falling off!!!)
Ill probably use bead on the heads etc as I have a small blaster at home with it in and given a lowish pressure that produces a nice finish that weathers down and looks good, grit however just attracts oil and grease and looks rubbish very quickly.
Cheers

Hi,
I wouldn't blast the cases. I have seen several sets done and each were full of media stuck in all the hard to reach areas. I would not want to put a motor together with the risk of media stuck inside the cases.
With my cases I have them cleaned in a hot tank and then spend lots of hours cleaning them by hand. Heads, pistons and cylinders (outside) I vapour first.
This is a 2.2S

There is a spray/paint that was used on Mg cases and gear boxes but the name escapes me right now. Do a search on Pelican as it has be discussed in depth.

Thanks Andy, that’s it.
The most important thing with the cases is that they are clean so you would be better to spend the time and funds cleaning the inside, and the best for that is "elbow grease".
Thanks
Alan

Dear Mr Dobly ;o)
I can do this vapour blasting stuff, but I do draw the line at having to travel to Sheffield.
I use this method on the carbs I sell on Volkszone along with a sonic bath and other methods. It’s a very mild method so excellent for carbs as it doesn’t effect tolerances but not that good if its aluminium that’s really badly corroded or has paint in cracks etc
Just out of interest whats the going rate for doing a set of rocker covers, or 911 fan etc. What are the dimensions for Porsche rocker covers?
Question for people that have had vapour blasting done on their Porsche parts. What medium are the blasters using in the water based blasters?
Cheers Mick
