Finally got a working timing light. The was perhaps a little retarded. Then I had a go at the carbs and tigthen the fan belt. I'm still learning about how to set up these cars

Rust weights more than steel. All that oxygen has to weigh something !!

The 2nd set have even more holes than this set !!!!!!! and weigh about 15 grams less !! You have to laugh.

I had a great day out with a friend. Drove about 250 miles today enjoying decent weather and quiet, dry roads in my 911 SC, my friends 993 C2 and Austin Healy Sprite. Got taken for a ride in a 1914 American La France which has a 16l engine plus Simplex Supercharger!

And I bought another car

Dusted off the 993 and took an early run into the Cotswolds to see family... missed the tourist traffic going but took twice as long coming home. But fast or slow, either way the 993 is a great drive.

Somebody should tell that signwriter he's missed a couple of letters out....

Well Nigel, it's no RS but still a lot of fun to drive and has the benefit of rear seats! You may recognise the car from our Wales trip - mint C2 with a few discrete mods to sharpen it up for fast road use. Maybe we should go modern on the next Wales trip?

I had another go at tuning the car. This time I decide to check all the values and decided that No 3 exhaust was a bit tight and adjusted. Mrs B isn't very good at standing at the back of the car and handing me spanners. She keeps wandering off. Unfortunately no kids were available so I had to go to the bottom of the assistant mechanic barrel.

Then I checked the timing again and I hadn't tired up the clamp so reset the timing but it appears that my distributor is unstable at max advance (after I had tighten the clamp).

Next I played with the carbs. I tried to set by ear. The method I've been using is open until the revs slow than screw in slow until it slows again. Then open to max revs. Plus after thinking you have it right rev and check the revs drop back to idle otherwise you are too rich (I think that is what Chris Turner showed me) Then I decided to check using the colour tune on No 4. Which was pretty good. The spark plug coloour looked ok too. Then I was more happy proceed by ear with a little more confidence. In the end I managed to get the engine idling about 600/700rpm and running much smoother. The flow tool was very useful when adjusting the idle. I took it over to Angus at Greatworth who is going to put some rust protection on the underside for me. The car ran every nicely and Mrs B couldn't keep up with me. However, I suspect that was mostly her pants driving.

Making thanks to everybody that has answered my basic questions as I continued to learn about these cars. I'm not home dry yet as I think the engine is still running a little hot but much better than before after I tighten the fan belt a little.

Great stuff, that's a nice car! Too modern for Peter in the end? Early or Modern, roll on another Welsh trip
