Working on the car with a hangover is never the best idea, but tackled the loom and having done it once it wasn’t that bad.

For future reference the technique of choice is:
- Disconnect loom inside luggage bay
- Feed loom into cabin down by the pedals and remove grommet
- Mark position of loom relative to starter cable with some coloured tape so you know when they are back in the right place.
- Straighten the loom out and fully wrap in tape from where it splits
- Wrap a strong flexible wire around the loom for the last 30cm or so and tape it in place. Make sure the wire is long enough to allow the harness to exit the cabin and there still be a good meter or so spare.
- Disconnect starter cable from battery
- Feed starter cable into cabin
- Wrap another lead wire around the starter cable and again wrap in electrical tape

- With the help of an assistant pull the starter cable out first. One person inside the car feeding it straight and the other in the engine bay pulling.
- Then do the same with the main loom
- You may find the starter cable sticks half way so you might need to move the loom with it.

- To replace pull the main harness through first, remembering to have fed it over the torsion tube.
- Assistant at the back guiding and feeding
- Then do the starter cable. Lubricate it with a bit of washing up liquid or your lube of choice…

It only took ten minutes to get both loom and starter cable in place so definitely an improvement over the 2 hours it took trying to do both loom and cable together.

So I’m now back where I was but with the harness in the right hole!

Getting it in the right hole is a good motto for life’s challenges

Putting more things in holes tonight…

Brake pipe went in easy enough.

Got the fuel lines ready to insert, new grommets on and then noticed damage on the larger pipe.

The damage exactly lines up with the inner seat mountings. I guess at some point the fixings were too long and bottomed out on the pipe. It’s doesn’t leak, but I can’t put it back in with a clear mind.

Hopefully I can source a pipe from a local hydraulics place rather than Porsche.

1 step forward…

Started on the rest of the dash wiring around the steering column this evening.

I’m not sure my note on one wire from 3 years ago is going to be particularly helpful!

Brown with a white tracer? Isn’t that the horn relay circuit from the horn push on the steering column?

It might be the pic is zoomed in, but that looks too thick for the horn wire to me. It looks like the thickness of a relay earth to me. What else exits the insulation with it Gary and what’s on the end, ring, male or female connector?

Where does the other end come out?

Brown and white is labelled 82a on the '71 model diagram with 82 being the "Heater pane" on the diagram key. It connects on the steering column in which it runs through to the "Steering ignition starter switch". But the other end is shown going to the horn relay so perhaps it's the ignition power to the horn. Make of that what you will.

Could also be the glove box light.
Wires with tracer colours are normally switched lines

.

If the brown/white wire has a spade terminal on the end, I'm with Sean ...

Brown & white wire (from the relay) connects to the horn contact 'slip ring'

Brown (earth) wire connects via a ring terminal to one of the steering column housing screws - item circled in red :

Or the handbrake or brake failure, (US model) switch lamp

Cheers gents, it’s got something to do with that but it’s not the horn slip ring, that’s this one! Image

It’s from the other stalk. I’m sure if I could read the wiring diagram I could work it out :)
Image

I fitted all the wiring to the sockets today and then got absorbed by this little time sponge:

Image

Took best part of an hour to route the cable through the A pillar, clean up the switch and make a decent connection on the back covered in heat shrink as I don’t like the thought of a live wire possibly floating about in amongst all that bare metal.

I’m not sure the other side will be any quicker!

Goal for the end of this weekend is all the instruments in and as much of the harness properly in place as I can.

There are a lot of posts on Pelican regarding a spare/unused brown & white wire in the dash area - here's a typical post:

Another theory is that it may be part of the Sportomatic wiring ...
