Well not much done on the car recently because of the arrival of some new friends

I changed the oil and filter today. Then I thought about setting the valves but really can't figure how to get in there past the heat exchangers? Any ideas?

The official terminology is 'with difficulty'.

Went for a drive but I started I fitted the new fuel sender Jonathan sent me. It immediately read the same as the old sender 1/4 full. I read that the tank capacity is 61.8l so I put 15.5l in the the tank. Which should of added another 1/4 of a tank. The gauge should now read 1/2 full and it did. Maybe working.

Next I didn't to adjust the gear linkage after a quick drive. Sometimes it is stickly when changing from 5 down to 4. It got it better but now a little tougher to get into 4th.

Cleaned the parts with white spirits. Got most is crap out from the inside. Then I cleaned and burnt of the remaining white spirit.

I made the mistake of trying to set the valves. This is a car fights you all the way. 1 hour to get the 2nd cover off. Another 2 hours turning the engine around to set the valves on one side. It's incredibly difficult to access them. Then my assistant declared that a 1/2 hour job was 3 so we put the covers back on. The car rewarded me by running rough with smoke and the rpm counter stopped working!! I love driving this car but I hate working on it

After cleaning the connectors for the heating I tried to paint yesterday. Dripping rain while I tried to spray and I ran out of paint so will have another go soon.

Does anyone else find that loading photos into here is now a pain and it keeps asking you to pay to use it?

Easy, just use Postimage. Free, simple and simply works.
Take your picture
Load onto the PC
Re-size (my iPhone images have to be reduced to 30%)
On the PC transfer to Pictures (Windows 10)
Open Postimage, select picture, picture comes up.
Choose the format for Forums and click Copy.
Go to DDK and paste on the post.

Looks long winded but is a breeze when used to the routine.

Do a search for Wurth spray paint on amazon

First valve adjustment. New throttle cable. Heat exchange pipe on.

So much better. Now has a proper throttle response.

I've been advised to go back to mineral oil for the next 1500 miles as the rings have not completely seated yet. The builder claimed that they would seat during the 2 hours he ran it in on his Dyno but someone that heard the engine said it's still blowing a bit.

If the rings were not run in then you would not hear it! It would burn oil though, lots of blue smoke out of the exhaust. How many miles or hours have you done on the new engine? The rings should be run in on the dyno if it was run for 2 hours.
What barrels and pistons do you have?
They could be talking about a blowing exhaust.
I always use mineral oil in air cooled engines as they wasn’t designed for synthetic oils. 10 40 or 20 50 Valvoline is good.
