Safe to say…..it was a slow one….. ,,,,,but there was also a sizeable matter about an engine……

Sheesh! - On that alu frame for the boot lid - I can see from the press that he can make the profile for the frames but how does he get the shallow (and repeatedly accurate) curves in the box section? Amazing stuff

I think…….I know…but a far better idea is to get the maestro to answer directly….

I will put it to him….and see if he can bless us with his words of wisdom…..

Thanks - thinking about it some more, my guess was that the form was used in a power hammer (they aren’t called that) and the repeated hammering action causes a curve. Getting that curve consistent would surely be a nightmare though

So whilst Barry works out how to explain the process, I shall continue….

Part 22
About time….


Steve has his own way of tacking projects…and in all honesty I neither question or doubt them….

For the most part it is an utter slog of an exercise involving countless hours of cleaning, sanding, filling and then sanding the vast majority of the filler off again

Steve prefers to build the filler up in many thin layers and allow plenty of time in between applications for the filler to not only harden, but also allow time for it to potentially sink

In the case of the XK they actually spent the best part of a fortnight cleaning all the underside and inside as the time in Barry’s workshop had been longer that normal, and with all the transition back and forth to me had allowed a surface layer of rust to develop everywhere



So the first images I received where of all the hidden bits…but reassuringly coated in plenty of epoxy primer and fully seam sealed and stone chipped

Not according to the concours route, as these cars were at best given a bitumen based layer of underbody protection, but as this is not a pure and faithful restoration, then preservation was taking precedence over re-creation





















And because many areas were ultimately going to be on show the engine bay and boot areas were carefully block sanded and filled to give a finish just as perfect as the outside…..



And then he sent the first of these areas on body colour….sometimes affected by the bright lights in his spray booth….











After so many months of the car being in just bare metal this was truly exciting…and did give me a real sense that there could be an end in (near) sight

In all honesty suede green is not a colour I would saunter into a Jaguar showroom and choose to purchase a car ….but with this restoration, after the mechanical and visual refinements I felt I needed to keep the original colour scheme inside and out….(suede green for both..) but without fail everyone who sees the car in the flesh or in picture immediately says…” lovely colour…”…..

I have grown to like it….it is perfectly period one in both look and feel….and perhaps that is what appeals to me most is it represents something from the past that is still beautiful today…

So yes….you are spot on….it’s a great looking colour on a 120….

Part 23

Even more lovelyness…..no real need for words is there…the flowing curves are just beautiful….these first images were from me when I went for the final check, which co-incided with Steve beginning the flatting off….














And these were the final images before she returned home to me…..finally back in one piece
