Thank you for the help everyone. The resistance was 0-70 ohms. I took it apart and cleaned it. However it was pretty clean already. I have about 3/4 of tank in so I don't know if I've fixed the problem yet.

Only just caught up with your thread Neil, good to hear you have got the car back. A little disappointing that you are unimpressed with the performance of the rebuild.
Maybe it will improve with a few miles and put a smile on your face.

You could... but you'd also need the correct sender to match. But you don't need a 0–10bar gauge (basically 0-145psi) - you only need a 0–5bar gauge (with suitable sender) or the gauge will spend it's time wallowing around the bottom end of the scale.

That is what is happening. I think my expectations where too high. The engine does need to be reved a bit too get going. Really comes alive from 3-5k

Glued the headliner back to the roof and too k it out for a drive with the top down. What a pain to put back on. Years ago when Andrew and Sarah demonstrated taking their roof off/on, their GT clone, they made it look so easy.

Starting to enjoy it alot more. Just need to get the fuel gauge sorted so I can take on a road trip

Today I established that it definitely the fuel sender. Just as KS said at the beginning. I found another thread which said the resistance should be 0-90 ohms. I checked the resistance in the wire from the gauge to the sender and it's 1 ohm so no shorts. I cleaned all the contracts and replaced all the fuses. I then double checked the resistance on the sender at 4-69 ohms. Next we put 100 ohm resistor in circuit, although the multi meter claimed 80, and saw the needle move to empty. Maybe I need to take the sender apart again and clean? Son no 3 a EEE graduate was helping so I've suggested to him he could do a resistance multiplier circuit for me. 1st year undergraduate work surely!

Hi Neil,

If it helps, I have a good S/H 914 fuel tank sender. The only part that may be suspect is the contact for the low level light.
I replaced it as i ran out of petrol several times when the gauge still read 1/4 full. Unfortunately buying and fitting a new sender didn't solve the problem, which I traced later to a blocked outlet filter gauze, which didn't allow fuel through once the level dropped below the top of it...........

Thank you that might be of help. It now reads 1/4 when empty .

I think you are saying yours had 1/4 tank left but the fuel couldn't get out!

If yours has 85/90 ohms resistance when empty it could help.

Drove the 914 to a local meet and lost this trim from the rear right!

This is my gauge with the original sender plugged in. As you can see, the low fuel light does work, but the gauge reads between rhe leg of the R and the tip of the 1/4 when empty. On my meter, it reads about 82 ohms.

Now that I have gone back to carbs I think I need one!

The full beam wasn't working so I changed the bulb but it still didn't work. Then I added a missing fuse and it worked.

I tried to add one of the led bulbs, I had bgt for the 912, but it wouldn't fit

Yes, the 6 has a temperature gauge as standard. I fitted dipstick sensor temperature gauges to our 914/4 and our Type 4 engined Bay vans, and they worked well and were simple to install. I sometimes had to back off in the vans because the temp was climbing, but not in the 914. Thinking about it, I had an external cooler fitted to the 914 under the grille on the engine lid, that probably helped!
