I'm not a fan of soft window Targas but the car looks great Neil - much nicer now it's back to Aga Blue.

Now you just need to change those number plates to some nice pressed aluminium ones ...

Some information for everybody and also a thanks to everybody that help with work and parts

-> Paint and bodywork by Charlie at Newdigate Body/Paint Shop. Previously I said that it was late and over budget. However, I want to be clear that Charlie kept to his budget almost to the £. It was myself deciding to convert to soft top and they extra bit that I needed to replace and added to the cost. It did take longer than he expected.

-> Assembly, door cards and advice by Mick Temple. I'm not sure how the work sharing arrangement worker between Newdigate and Mick but he probably took payment in Tea and Jaffa cakes?

Seirra Made Targa Seals from US via eBay. Cheaper when I bought them as a package.

Yves, from Canada, supply of Soft Top frame, handles, kit and fitting instructions. He sourced the soft window and cover. If you are thinking of doing it. The kits and window cost about £1,800 and another £1,400 to fit. I was missing some brackets off the back of the car so if you still have those the fitting should be cheaper. Yves was super helpful with extra info and pictures. Really a pleasure to deal with.

Bits and pieces from Roger Bray Restoration. I bought the bonnet shocks so now it stands up.

Adam from Porsche Bolton. I started using Adam for parts later in the build and wished I've used him before. Always a pleasure to deal with. We had a couple of chats about our cars and he even put in a Christmas in an order.

Tower Porsche John/Peter. I know some on here have reservations but they were they only one willing to have a go at the soft top without month of notice. The also did a couple of other tiny bits like reconnecting and sorting out the heating which have make a massive difference.

I can't recommend the chroming company.

Hi Neil. I've just read thru the whole thread with great interest. We have a '68 Targa L here for a light resto and I've been thinking of converting it to a soft window. It looks great. By now you must know if its quite or very waterproof?

The rear soft window is pretty water tight. It's been out in light rain. The problem areas are the same as for all targas. The targa bar seal with the roof and the side window seals. I have a power point presentation on how to do the conversion. Pm your address and I will send it. I m up in Daventry this/next weekend with the targa and I would be happy to drop by so you could see that the softtop looks like

Sry Angus I've completely missed this. Unfortunately on both Saturday we didn't get into the Midlands to after 3pm but I will send you the powerpoint and let you know when I'm up next.

The refresh continues. I'm slowing sorting out little things bit by bit

Old coil


New coil. After we cleaned the clamp and contacts on the wires.


Hasn't made any difference to the way the car runs which probably shows there is some life in the old coil. All well now I have a spare in my toolbox!

While we were there I checked the timing with my light, which very helpfully has a dial for the setting the advance you want. Which was about zero/3 at idle and 30ish at 3000rpm.

Next will be the oil filter canister and generator.

After my 300 mile round trip. I'm glad to say there is a a lack of oil in the engine bay.

Next on the menu is cleaning up and servicing the generator, oil filter canister and oil filler canister.

The CoA confirms that this is the original engine

The generator looks like it is in real need of a clean! However, it has been working well!



A picture to remind me which order to put the wires back on in. The oil filter canister will be changing back to silver.

This number was on the generator stand? The first three digital is the engine type but what are the rest?



What should I use to clean inside the generator stand and oil filler canister? Carbo cleaner?

Thanks pretty obvious now you mention it!

It would be a good plan to remake the connectors onto your new coil, when you get a chance Neil
