Got in the car, on Saturday morning, to take my son to Coulsdon for his run training. Normally I would join in but I had to continue on to see Garry (Visual FX) about my Targa Roof. As once as I started to drive the car it was pretty obvious my fiddling with the carbs had made everything worst. No response from the engine. I got to Garry's after a only one wrong turn. The it's alway nice to visit the new Gatwick countryside there Mick/Garry live. Lovely large houses hidden at the end of private drive with lots of land.

Garry seems to be super busy and accepts work on other german cars and maybe even italian cars. What is world coming to? However, his hearth is in the right place as his house is complete covered with lots of Porsche art. I'm not really sure how he talked Mrs VisualFx into that as I'm only allow one picture in the house and the rest in the garage

Another he offer some good advice but it's appears the simple, but no cheap answer, is recovering the roof. Plus he suggested that the doors are a little low which would expect why we have trouble getting the windows high enough. His first time available is March 15. Well at least that gives me some time to save some pennies.

Then I decide to drive up to Daventry rather than returning to London and called Chris Turner to see if I could drop in on Monday morning to get a lesson in setting up the carbs and he was happy to help!

Once I got to Daventry it was even clearer that I had mess something up so I decided to try and restore it myself first. First task was to check the timing as I've been told that 70% of carb issues are really timing. Unfortunately my timing gun has decided not to work! I checked that I have voltage going to it but no light on the side to indicate power and no flashes. Next I tried again with the carbs and got it better. I even managed to get the tune colour to work on cylinder 4 and saw a nice yellow. However, I did shock myself in the process. The only thing that did worry me is that I seem to be getting quite a bit air coming from the left carb/fan housing when I rev the engine. I don't think it's a leaking carb as I would have petrol on my hand so maybe a gap in the housing?

Fast forward 20 hours and I'm having to take our dog to the vets for the 2nd time and my fiddling has made the car nice to drive again! I'm sure that Chris will help me make it much better. I checked that my gearbox oil was topped up. Somehow I had got it into my head that despite me only changing the oil 4k ago, that this was an issue. However, once I took the filler plug out it started draining onto my hand immediately so no problem there. While I was under the car I put some grease on the gearbox to wheel UJs.

I spent most of Saturday marshalling on Porlock Toll Road for LeJog. Plenty of Porsche interest, including a 356 and 3 early 911's going well. Also 2 of KS's German cousins (??) Reiner and Julian Seume, in an "arrive & drive" Range Rover .

Blimey! Wish I'd known they were coming over. We're not entirely sure how direct a family connection there might be, but all our research leads back to a common ancestor, Johann Gottfried Seume. They produce Elysée watches (one of which I am wearing right now...).

That will explain the sponsorship of the event by Elysee watches then...........

Drove down to Chris Turner from Daventry via the M1. I arrived at 7am but Chris still beat me there! Then we checked the timing and he showed me how to adjust the carbs. Makes sense when someone that knows what they are doing shows you. 911hillclimber you were correct too rich. We got them adjusted then decided we still weren't happy so Chris checked the flow between the left / right carb and they were off. We balanced the carbs, rechecked the mixtures and I had a very smooth drive into work.
