Well, when my last post said ‘Raptor this weekend’ that was clearly rubbish

However time passes and after about 10 hours of scuffing up and detail masking over the last few days I’ve started on it.
...and about 10 minutes of actual spraying later I used up all four cans...

LH front and rear wheel arch, sill, and whole floor up to the torsion bar done.

Goes on really well. Zero points for concours or originality, but hey that’s really not my goal!

My use of the word 'can' may have been misleading.

With a paint of paint I'd say that's going to look pretty much factory imo......great job Gary

Cheers Darren, It was originally black (ish) underneath anyway so I'm calling it done

The bit I'm not sure of is if the sills are supposed to be be black or colour under the wide trims on a '72. You can paint over this once it's cured so anything is still possible.

Looks bloody good....nice one....

I agree, looks fantastic and arguably much better protected than when it was built. Good for another 50 years+

Another 8 bottles of Raptor and 2 litres of epoxy turned up today so no excuses not to finish the underside/inside and bays at the weekend



Green is coming. Getting some quotes at the moment then going to take a punt based on the confidence I get from the conversation and seeing past work.

That gut feel when you talk the job is so important to see if you are on the same wavelength regarding the quality/cost/competence ratio!

I’ve put every effort into my own prep with detail masking of the epoxy/raptor layers that the outside should be straightforward, accepting that all panels need to be block sanded into each other.

Just posted a video of a classy 914 restoration in the 914 section.
The body shop found out what height the shells were at on the paint trollies and has the body man spray the car with the shell at that height to get the right over spray on the underside(!)

If you paint the coating on the underside all over, won't it get to look a bit rough after a few Alpine adventures let alone French B roads?
Are you tempted to paint the inside DIY and just leave the outside to the pro?

All the inside and underside is staying black.

Irrespective of what it may have looked like originally all of the inside is covered in carpet or vinyl so it doesn’t matter. I’m only going up to the waistline, the dash top and roof underside are staying untouched factory, which is green in places.

Having done a bit more digging everything visible from the road underneath is black, so that’s staying as per the pics above.

Arches/engine bay/luggage bay are originally poorly applied satin black over a thin coat of green. So solid black it is I may give it a coat of statin to matt it off as the epoxy is shiny as applied.

It’s absolutely a usable car, not a show car. Even if I had the time/money/motivation for a green underside/bays I’m not sure I would.

Luckily for me the cheaper/faster/lazier route is black

So in short:
Pro A surface - Green
Amateur B surface - Black

Once you’ve got some welsh road miles under its belt, won’t matter what color you’ve painted it underneath
