People say the same about the pharma company that bought a cancer drug and raised the price 1,000%. Obviously it's a bit more of a raw nerve when people's lives are on the line rather than just their fun weekends in a classic car but it's the same principle - siezing an asset and holding it to ransom for its full value because either you're more hard-nosed, mroe greedy, or have a superior understanding of its true value. I'm not saying I judge them because capitalism is the system we all live within, and which brought about the making of the Porsche 911 in the first place so we all have to subscribe to it to some degree, but they do extract the consumer surplus for themselves. Without them, there would be a load of 911s in ownership of end-users who bought them for £20k less or sold them for £20k more. There would be more cars on the market at any given time, and more of them at a reasonable price. So I'm probably going to keep hating on them for depriving enthusiasts like us of bargains.

Now I see things really differently. There is nothing similar at all to a cancer drug scenario (not sure if real or hypothetical). The asset has not been seized, or held to ransom. Bought and (potentially) sold on the open commercial market.

Hmmm, if only trading in cars was as simple as a clean,polish and write a nice advert.

A reputable dealer (or one who is trying to build a reputation) will also have to warranty the car. To enable them to do this they will also have inspected the car, serviced it and fixed minor problems. They will have significant overheads on that showroom so you don’t have to view the car in the rain on someone’s driveway.
So that 20k premium isn’t the profit, and the proportion of it that is will have VAT included which they will have to hand to HMRC.

And of course any of us had the same chance to buy the car originally if we’d wanted to take the risk of a private sale.

And back on topic, lightweight SC for £80k. The front looks a bit odd to me. Perhaps it's the bottom corners of the bumper.

Yes, agreed, I think the car looks fab and Henry is very positive about it. The SC I had was exactly as he described, feeling a bit dull, especially in the steering dept.

One of the best handling cars was a short-stroke 3.2 that Nick Fulljames built and Nick had set up the suspension. When I asked him the geo settings, he claimed "Porsche standard", which I didn't think was quite what it was! But a lovely chuckable car.

Somebody asked for a definition of what it meant "to flip" and I just provided one. A trader who sells for £20k more having added £20k of value, I wouldn't view as a flip. In this particular instance, it's hard to imagine how that particular 911 was worth £20k more to some buyer than it was two or three days earlier for sale privately.

That was me. We are going round in circles. Having made this argument and failed and then moved on to a spurious "cancer drug" argument, maybe time to call it a day?

Having fun - me too. I'm only hating on those pesky car dealers in a gentle ribbing sort of hating. The parasitic drug companies only differ by degree - the principle of seeing an asset being marketed at below the price somebody is willing to pay, purchasing it and remarketing it at a higher price is obviously identical. The product is just a lot more important and sensitive in that case. Taking principles to extremes is useful because it increases clarity.

Re your claim I failed, I acknowledge that you don't concede the argument and I can handle that without having to attempt to bruise your ego. I see this as being a more sensitive topic to you because you're a trader and you're sensitive to the question of whether traders actually contribute anything worthwhile to society. I work in marketing and I often ask myself if what I do is actually worthwhile too. It's good that we're moral people.

I may be mistaken but FX/Options Trader doesn’t equate to a used car salesman as far as I am aware!
