Thanks guys, really appreciate the input.

The Porsche book photo looks very early, possibly prototype, and interesting to note the car fitted with the smaller Whale Tail with no 'RS' sticker.

Also interesting to see a couple of press photos contradicting each other so maybe positioning did change back to the manual instructions later on?

Obviously I'm no graphic designer and a rather crude guess although I did trace the outline of the 'a' along with where I think the door edge would be on this Lord Hesketh photo which was no doubt taken early in his ownership when the car was relatively new. To my eyes the 'a' looks to be solely on the door and not overlapping onto the wing.....possibly anyway!



I think there's enough evidence to go either way and I'm leaning towards the 'a' not touching the wing which I guess I'm saying because that's the way I want to go.

Without more definitive proof that's what I'll do and I'll enjoy the banter when people tell me I did it wrong!

Clearly there isn’t definitive proof so go with what you like

We have enough trouble tracking change points on modern production cars let alone homologation specials from the 70s!

Don’t worry Darren, if we find out you’ve got it wrong I’ll take the whole sorry mess of a car off your hands for 10 bags.

I'm not convinced the factory would be that bothered about a few mm here, a few mm there.

Bit like overspray of the body colours on floor pans, there were real people getting on with the job, and people are different.

Where's the engine?

I have to agree with Graham. I suspect the finish on many restored early car is better than it left the factory.

.... I don't think the race department cared about much more other than how light it was, how quick it was and that it didn't break!

Now that's a sore point!

My issue has been camshafts. I sourced a set of original RSR camshafts and sent these away to be checked and refurbished where they were given a clean bill of health.

Unfortunately when Nick came to time these he wasn't happy with the result. Apparently most engine builders aren't that paticular with fueling low down as nobody is much interested with what happens below 4K revs on an RSR engine however this is going to be more of a street car and needs to be driveable at all speeds. Although I only know of one part number for 3.0RSR cams I'm told there are three variations.

As such Nick has been in dicussion with camshaft suppliers who are now providing a new set of centre feed 3.0RSR cams. We should receive a set of blank cams today to double check the timing will be to Nick's satisfaction whilst the actual set are being machined for the centre oil feed and spark erosion etc before the final grind.

Nick will be finishing as much of the engine as he can in the meantime so we should be pretty much there once the actual finished cams arrive in 2-3 weeks.

Three days and probably 600 + miles towing around a small aircraft hanger have reminded me just how poo driving an old 300TDi Landy really is! I'm exhausted!!....



...but then unlike the gifted DIYer's on here I'm rubbish with bits of string and therefore put my trust in the people in Atherstone and the car needed collecting from GDC for my early Tuesday date....



...my appointment with Center Gravity was somewhat premature, no door frame or side glass, the roll bar and a chuck of the interior missing and not even the correct engine meant I wasn't quite ready for geometry and corner weighting. However with a long booking lead time and the chance to nab a cancellation I took the plunge!....I knew it was needed!!...



....and so the long day began with Chris working out what weight was need for fuel and all other missing items and promptly filling the car with ballast....



....I particularly liked the couple of bottles thrown in when I told him the car hadn't yet been filled with brake fluid!!...



...

...I've always enjoyed my visits to Center Gravity and Chris really takes the time to help you learn a lot...



...always a number of glorious cars on site too..



...naturally the end result is what counts...



...but it ain't quick and with it approaching 8:00PM Chris was still on his hands and knees!...



...finally after a mammoth twelve and a half hours with just a short break for lunch, Chris was happy and he helped me load the trailer for the journey home...



...using Center Gravity may not be cheap but I feel they are great value. Both my previous cars have gone there and came away perfect without me ever feeling the need to change anything.

This car will no doubt require a little development and I'm sure to be back but at least I know it'll drive straight and any future changes made will be to enhance characteristics rather than rectify a poorly set up car!

So with the car finally looking like it's not heading for Kenya, I decided now was a good time to apply a few stickers!

...rear window sticker aside this magic is way above my pay grade and therefore I called in a friend who's been helping me for years....



...and of course the really do count!....



...fully stickered up the car was loaded for a trip back to Gary at GDC.....
