I did all that kidney area on my diy resto 31 years ago, and it is solid to this day.
I'm no body guy, but preparation is everything.
All I had then was very basic stuff, real Red Oxide on clean steel and seam sealer and then 2 good coats of smooth Hammerite.
When that was all cured (2 weeks in the summer) a good dose of Waxoil inside and out ensuring drain holes were clear.

Keeping this skin intact is key, so jet wash every few years and clean like mad, recoating any broken and stone chipped areas. Gary's shields will really reduce this problem and wise.
