Cold - I bought a clock for my workshop with a built in thermometer - yesterday it didn't get above 6.2 degrees! But I guess Darren in his lock up is even colder..

Joking aside, I am wondering whether working on cars in this cold weather is a step too far. Or is this what is required to get my car ready for spring?

Agree with Darren, step drills are the way forward.

6.2 degrees? That's warm compared to some of the temperatures I saw in my garage when I was doing more 6 years ago. I was younger then though - no way I'd be so stupid these days. Spent an hour or there on Saturday and then came in as is lost feeling in my toes

Sadly I took the pipes out of the tank when I refurbed it so I dont know which one should go into which hole. My tank doesn't have left or right its front and back. I think the tanks changed in 74 ish though Im not sure of the difference.

Hi Andy, I was checking my tank out today before I took it to Enviro Strip for cleaning and took a photo of the supply and return pipes which may be of help to you. It's a 1975 car so the pipes are front and back not left and right. You can see that the return pipe has been blocked off.

I dont mind the cold so long as Im moving about and not lying on the floor. I did think about getting a heater but I think being cold is part of the rebuild, you know a little discomfort to add to the pain and the grazed knuckles etc. I can last for an hour before my head torch runs out of charge, so I get to come in to the house and get warm.. thats my excuse anyway

About 10 years ago I took the roof off my house including the joists & trusses and just had a scaffold tent over the top of the remaining walls while I changed from a Hip to a Pitched roof so that I could build my loft conversion.
Like all my projects I did this single handed rather than employ anyone. As a consequence this took me far longer to complete. In between saving up for more material deliveries I continued to restore cars while the roof was off the house.

Here’s a photo I took in my living room, at my dining table, I had no heating as the water tank in the attic was now “outside” and drained down. I had to boil water on the stove in a pan to warm up my car paint as it was 4C in my living room!



The pain of grazed knuckles goes away at cold temperatures and you need to buy 2 torches so one is always being charged while you’re using the other.

We mustn't get competitive about hardship, one of us will start talking about outside toilets and it will end up like a monty python sketch!

There is a fine balance between making progress and hating doing work as it is too cold. Trying to heat a workshop is prohibitively expensive. Wearing too many layers just means you cant move. I find it okay until I stop and have a break for a cuppa, that is the point that I think brrr.

We can all set up web cams and see who wimps out first:-)

We supposedly do this for fun! Or maybe cold weather training in winter will prepare us for driving without the roof on in spring

has anyone had any issues with the dimmer relay?

I bought mine from VW heritage, worked fine during 'testing/messing about'. Tried to use it the other day and the main beam wouldn't stay on. It would flash but that was it. I took the relay apart and had a look at it. It has a mechanism that is meant to toggle between main and dip which just gets stuck on dip. Ive put a bit of WD40 on it to see if a bit of lube would help and it does but still working intermittently. If you pull main beam a few times it switches on, then you have to pull it a few more times and it goes off.

Just one of many shoddy second rate parts from various suppliers. Anyone had the same problem? Is there a fix or an alternative?
