Just seen these pictures on Erics Facebook, so it looks like they have started on the engine. A while back I asked for compression numbers and got the following;

1 - 90
2 - 90
3 - 90
4 - 130
5 - 90
6 - 90

I don't pretend to know much about engines but the perceived feeling was that it should be around 140-145. It is consistent but worn (consistently worn!). Scoping the bores showed cleaner edges to the piston tops which I understand can mean oil ring issues. We could just go for a top end rebuild, but at this stage I don't want to have to do this again (not for a very long time). So a complete rebuild was agreed.

Here we go...

As I said engine bits are not my thing, I barely understand how they work and wouldn't dream of taking this on myself without lots of help and plenty of time.

In fact I got this for Christmas in an attempt to get a better idea....I know its a V8 and not a flat 6 but I thought it might throw some light on the mechanics of it all. It remains unopened much to my daughters annoyance. Maybe I will have a go now!

I have recently returned from a work/pleasure trip to the USA and managed to squeeze in a visit to Utah to finally meet the car I have been looking at on-screen for nearly a year and the guys who have been carefully dismantling, restoring and putting back together. I flew from L.A. to Salt Lake early in the morning and was very kindly picked up by Eric from PMB performance. I felt a little nervous as we hadn't met before and coming from London a bit embarrassed that someone would take the trouble to actually pick me up from the airport! We chatted on the short trip over to where the car was located at Troy Lundquist Restoration. Both Eric and Troy were incredibly hospitable and really pleased to meet me. They carefully showed me around the car and explained exactly what they had done, what the issues had been and the successes in making this a first class restoration. I was absolutely gobsmacked by firstly seeing the car in the flesh and also by the level of craftsmanship Troy, Eric and their teams had achieved. We spent the best part of 2 hours going through the process and discussing what was left to be done. Troy is a master at bodywork and kindly showed me photos of previous work and also some other projects he is working on. He only takes on one at a time and the little Porsche has been a favourite of his and this is clearly shown.

I was of course faithfully wearing my DDK t-shirt...

I can't believe how fortunate I was to stumble across these guys through a PPI on Early S registry. It seems as well that through no skill of my own I managed to buy a car that was tired, but hadn't been messed around with or was hiding lots of rust.

The guys took me for lunch up in the mountains which was beautiful. We then went back to Erics shop where he showed me some of the cars he was working on as well as bits of mine that were there. His team specialise in restoring brakes and working on mainly 914s. It was a very impressive and well organised set-up somewhere I would recommend if you are looking for refurb of any Porsche brakes. Then off to the airport to catch my evening flight.

Great guys and great work. I feel I truly lucked out. They are now working on the engine which is having a full rebuild and at the same time the car will be getting a new/restored interior courtesy of Tony from Autos International.

Cant wait to drive it.... :compress: :compress: :compress: :compress:

Fantastic - and those front indicators and horn grills are spot on. And that's difficult. Ask me how I know :-)

Agreed. I have no idea how to get them to fit!

Jos, Looks like you have struck lucky on the car and most importantly the guys putting it together. :)
