I had a similar experience in my 904 replica when a faulty voltage regulator allowed the alternator to overcharge - cooking the Odyssey PC 968 battery & 'frying' the twin MSD spark boxes ...

Confirmed, no damage to CDI+. Or anything else, in fact, with the exception of some blown headlight bulbs.

Alternator and regulator both went for test. Both faulty. I ended the investigation there and bought the uprated alternator (which has the regulator built in).

Motorola Marchal. Probably the original from the car, since that would be period correct.

I did, once upon a time, have info about which was likely fitted in each year. Probably from early s, they like that sort of thing...
For my 70 car I looked at a ton of early 70 reference pics and they all used the Motorola regulator (regulator is specific to the alternator, and easily identified in a decent engine bay photo).

Why were there 2 different alternator brands? Year specific? Country specific?
Which of the two had better reliability and longevity?

Yes, I think that the SEV-Marchal & Motorola alternators are effectively the same part - I seem to remember that the branding depended on the destination ... Motorola was supplied to the US & SEV-Marchal to ROW markets.
I don't know if there was any logic to whether a particular model got a Bosch or SEV-Marchal/Motorola alternator - both brands are listed for '69-'73 models according to the Factory's Technical Specifications booklets ...
