Emmissions Test - MOT

Do early cars need to pass the Emmissions Test to pass the MOT?

I have a 1970 911 californian import car and have been told it needs to be able to pass one - is this correct?

Its a visual test for pre-75 cars. Excess smoke or excess idle speed will fail you. I think they have a look at it at 50% of max revs too.
