Love the building and the Guilia's FANTASTIC !
I sold mine earlier in the year to fund divorce fees and have regretted it every since.

I used to like the idea of saving a few quid sourcing stuff myself but I just find it a headache now. Contractors do not like it either and it gives them a get out if your sourced parts make their work more difficult. With a turn key project, if you don’t like something, they will generally fix it - especially if the last payment depends on customer sign off.simon james wrote: ↑Thu Dec 26, 2024 12:43 pm Johnny, Thank You.
I see you went hot rolled, with flush side rails. Top Job!
I have a local chap near me who was prepared to do the Portal Frames like yours. The problems then are all the extras required.
I can source the purlins, rails and cladding etc. from a local firm that I deal with.
I’d need to buy doors and pay for them costing to match.
I then need extra drawings and Structural Calculations.
All this finishes up costing me more than going through Murray, who have already provided me with drawings and calcs.
I realise there’s a space penalty using cold rolled, but the financial saving offsets this.
Our site too has restricted entry but is thankfully separate from the house through an additional gate.
We’re hoping to put euroboards down to cover the grass, but yes, I’m prepared for the mud!!
In my case, I spec’d the polished concrete floor and it was in the quote. The main concrete guys said they could do it but got the fear last minute. This was all resolved by the main contractor and another specialist crew came in. No extra cost.
I reckon we had heavy plant across the driveway 100 times. We had heavy plates across some of it. Literally ground into the mud. We did start in February and it was very wet. Telehandlers might as well have giant egg whisks for wheels.
If you have grass/field I would strongly recommend you cut a temporary track. Remove the topsoil, put to one side, terram and hardcore. Once all the telehandler work is done and the building is up, move the track hardcore into the sub base of the barn and reinstate the top soil in your field.
The Super is a great little car. Handling and steering are wonderful. Mines got a 2L, big brakes ans some other bits.

And there we are. Nail on the head!
You’ve just confirmed what we’ve said.
The other thing is if I damage a panel trying to fit it, it’s my responsibility to source (and pay for) a replacement. If their team do, it’s theirs!
Our next hurdle is Building Regs as these can (apparently) take time to get!
Thank You for your words of wisdom and hopefully things should go to plan!

I am in much the same position. Going the timber route, 6m x 15m. There are a lot of wooden kit builds advertised but a lot of them only do the frame. Customers still need to arrange roofing, cladding, doors, windows etc.
These people do all of that so a one stop shop including a plan and erecting the entire shebang. I need to arrange ground clearance, cement base and 3 brick high foundation for the structure to sit on. Contacts in the pub are offering full range of services on a personal basis! Plus lots of beers!
Olson are quoting 25k plus drat. Anybody been down this route? Wondering what the pitfalls might be? Wondering if any ddkers used Olson in the past?

That plot of land looks like a very place for living with all those trees and no neighbours.
I also need a garage but I'm not prepared to spend £100K
Without planning permission, my garden will not allow any wider than 6m but lengthwise can be up to 16m, but I'd settle for 12m. Would £40K do it? (Cavity wall brick)?

Drag the ground back level and get your local recycling centre to drop a wagon or two of crush and run. Have a mini digger spread it over the ground and the driveway. Having a non muddy site is priceless for working on, and your hardstandings will be semi finished before you even get to landscaping.Jonny Hart wrote:Oh, be prepared for this...

I'm looking for a pre-impact bumper 911S or other high-revving 911 to restore - please let me know if you see one.

No experience of Olson, but I did once erect a Pasmores Cart House for a customer which went smoothly.veryporky wrote: ↑Sat Dec 28, 2024 11:16 am https://www.olsontimberbuildings.co.uk/

Advertised as Oak Framed, the only oak was the opening on the end, the rest being softwood and the roof was engineered trusses.

The one that Jonny had built really is the best of the best, hence the price tag and as a rough rule of thumb you get what you pay for!
I’d be wary of a brick or block building, one of my barns is single skin brick with pillars and a vaulted timber roof. Lovely to look at but has cracks that have been repaired over the years. A timber or steel building wouldn’t suffer as badly in the event of any movement!

Re: Murray Steel Buildings

I doubt it.
Good luck with it, it's another adventure, but very well worth it despite all the niggles that come along. We finished this just before covid lock-down, so I was kept sane by getting it kitted out through that spring and summer.
Cheers

Sadly, that is what you are looking at! I'm done with 'crushed concrete' - it is nothing of the sort anymore - it's mostly crushed builder's rubbish and mud. In the end I dug all that out with my little Kubota and got 4 lorry loads of reject bricks from the local brickworks. No crap, just lovely dry hardcore. Tracked in with the digger, then rolled and compacted, then topped with road planings.RobFrost wrote: ↑Sat Dec 28, 2024 3:37 pmDrag the ground back level and get your local recycling centre to drop a wagon or two of crush and run. Re: Murray Steel Buildings
We still needed planning although we are a farm (by name at least) so it's a little easier to sway an agricultural style building. We are on clay and on a slope + can get windy so metal frame is the way to go on this sire.IanM wrote: ↑Sat Dec 28, 2024 2:15 pmThat plot of land looks like a very place for living with all those trees and no neighbours.

Your best bet cost wise is a softwood frame with panels prefabbed off site. These buildings only need a slab and one course of bricks. I've used 'Levade Systems' twice (link below) - the building is a bit more shed like (and not insulated) but I reckon you could do 12m x 6m for £12k - £15k all done.

I had a similar timber 6m x 6m garage supplied/erected by National Stables (after getting the base slab work done by a local builder) - only took them a day to erect it/fit the doors, etc.
That was 15 yrs ago & it's been maintenance-free until earlier this year when I had the roof replaced due to a couple of leaks caused by expansion/contraction of the original corrugated Onduline panels.
