A Monte Carlo was one of the very first cars I had on road test while at Hot Car magazine - must have been late 1977 or early 1978. It rained most of the time and the front brakes would lock up at the slightest hint of pressure on the pedal. It was a well-known 'fault' with the early cars and Lancia made changes to cure the problem. One of our art editors had one which she stuffed into the back of a car one wet night. Loved the driving position and adored the looks. I'm envious that Andy owned one!

Andy, I notice yours has had a 'buttress change' since you owned it...

Yes - surprised at that because the car was a very rare early version that several other Montecarlo owners told me didn't exist - a RHD model with 'solid' buttresses.

As for the driving experience, I wasn't impressed (although to be fair I didn't drive it much as it needed restoring) - the performance was 'mediocre' & the S1 brakes , as Keith mentioned, were useless - a distinct case of 'all show no go' ...

Years later I drove a modified Montecarlo fitted with an Alfa 3.0 V6 conversion & it was fantastic - exactly how the car should have performed in the first place !

I love them, and I have to say that whilst very non standard, I do love that wheel / colour combo.

A chap in the nearby town has one in Gulf blue, and I often walk the dog past there hoping to have a chat with him about it

Funnily I spotted that lurking behind the purple 911 on the Porsche thread and nearly screengrabbed it.

I'm looking for a pre-impact bumper 911S or other high-revving 911 to restore - please let me know if you see one.
